Fender Fretless Jazz

Recommended Posts

Now that I'm playing URB more and also have a Fender jazz bass I thought it would be good to have a Fender fretless in the arsenal. I found a 1998 MIM jazz fretless in mint condition at a decent price and brought it home. No photos yet but I'm overdue for a picture of the family since there are two other basses I haven't taken photos of and will make an attempt to do that this weekend.

Sounds like a great addition to the family. That reminds me, I need to break out the fretless as well, it's been too long.

Guitar solos last 30 seconds, the bass line lasts for the whole song.

Excellent call, I did the same thing years ago: 1999 MIM Jazz (got lucky with a custom shop order that went South and came back MIM) then added a Badass II, drop D and bone nut. Sounds fantastic with that recognizable form factor. Love my fretless! Many wonderful legato lines in your future!

Having a fretted jazz made nailing intonation really easy with the already realized muscle memory. It's dark burgundy with a white pick guard. I'm thinking about getting another one and was looking around. Let me know your thoughts on which one you think would look good with the finish: http://www.wdmusic.com/pickguard_jbs_300.html

Creme pickguard with midnight wine sounds really smooth, better than pure white, IMO.

Here ya go Wally. Mockups of black, cream pearl, cream and rosewood.

I'm feeling the cream pearl myself....

Thanks for the mock ups Ken. I agree the cream pearl of those above wins. I was also wondering what the mirror pink would look like and would be a statement towards ending cancer. The tort in the link above doesn't look bad either. The rosewood isn't what I expected.

As the son of a breast cancer survivor and the daddy to two girls I love the pink idea although mirror finish is a bitch to keep clean and could be potentially blinding to the audience via stage lighting. There's always a pink ribbon sticker (I'm one of those guys who's not adverse to putting a sticker on a bass). Decking out a new bass makes for some fun decisions.

I played it today with a friend playing a B3 & a Nord. That was the only bass I took and I was totally at home. We were playing jazz tunes. I'm really digging this bass!
