bassmute

Well, a while ago I bought the bassmute (http://www.bassmute.com/bassmute/bm_mainframe.html), screwed it on my Fender P and I'm very happy with it.

I can play with a pick between the pickups and the neck while the strings are muted for a Serge Gainsbourgy/Rickenbacker sound or put a lot of attack in the strings with the top of my fingers while the notes die out quick for a more oldskool vibe.

you can turn it on at half pressure or full pressure.

the only downside is that when you play with a pick you have to remember not to play too close to the bridge or you might suddenly turn of the bassmute. it becomes second nature after a while to play closer to the neck than i used to but still...

just so you know :)

cheerio!

One of the other bass players in rotation at church has been looking for something like that for his Jazz 5... I just sent him the link.

Thanks for the review.

I rather the palm mute idea playing with the thumb.

I don't really dig the idea of sticking tape to my bass

Wow everything old is new again - the return of the rubber mute. Neat idea if you aren't opposed to putting holes into your bass otherwise I'd rather palm mute also or use a piece of foam rubber.

I know, never understood why they ditched the rubber mute.

Palm muting is fine but is limited for me. My thumb cannot do what my other fingers can do.

I didn't mind screwing 2 screws in because I know this bass is a keeper :)

True. I've been thinking about getting some foam to put under my strings back by the bridge for some of the music I play with my funk band. Low impact and easily reversable is the name of the game.

Yep, a P-bass, some old flats and a piece of foam rubber and you're halfway there. Just add groove.

Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it.

Here's a picture of my pea bass with foam under the bridge.

(there's a little reflection of the foam on the body of the bass).

The mute is easily removable. ;)

The bass is a Fernandes copy. I put a Seymour Duncan vintage pickup in it and it has LaBella flatwound strings which have been on for a few years. I never plan on changing the strings.

The bass sounds better every year and is the perfect studio bass (that's the only place I play it).

Just in the interest of being informative, Rickenbacker has always had a foam mute stock on all of their 4000 series basses prior to the 4004 (which uses conventional Fender-style bridges). It sits on a metal plate that can be lifted up or down by twisting a couple of knobs. Most people don't even know it's there because it is well "hidden" in the tailpiece design. For all the flack their bridge/tailpiece takes for being "unconventional" (as 40-plus-year old designs go), they really pulled this part of it off very well--it definitely gets the job done. The foam mute is best for dub and upright mimicry, which I don't do a lot of, but occasionally will pull out...

Just some Jeopardy Bass Edition trivia for anyone curious.
