cloclo
Well, a while ago I bought the bassmute (http://www.bassmute.com/bassmute/bm_mainframe.html), screwed it on my Fender P and I'm very happy with it. http://www.jo-co.be/langshier/bp/3771314875_760cdf7d77_b.jpg http://www.jo-co.be/langshier/bp/3772119700_ba98c9f5ef_b.jpg I can play with a pick between the pickups and the neck while the strings are muted for a Serge Gainsbourgy/Rickenbacker sound or put a lot of attack in the strings with the top of my fingers while the notes die out quick for a more oldskool vibe. you can turn it on at half pressure or full pressure. the only downside is that when you play with a pick you have to remember not to play too close to the bridge or you might suddenly turn of the bassmute. it becomes second nature after a while to play closer to the neck than i used to but still... just so you know cheerio! Davo-London
Sounds interesting, but for that muted reggae tone I would rather palm mute and play with my thumb - but thanks for the review. DanYmaL X
One of the other bass players in rotation at church has been looking for something like that for his Jazz 5... I just sent him the link. b5pilot
Wow everything old is new again - the return of the rubber mute. Neat idea if you aren't opposed to putting holes into your bass otherwise I'd rather palm mute also or use a piece of foam rubber. Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it. http://www.myspace.com/theeldoradosband
DavidMPires
I rather the palm mute idea playing with the thumb. I don't really dig the idea of sticking tape to my bass www.myspace.com/davidbassportugal "And then the magical unicorn will come prancing down the rainbow and we'll all join hands for a rousing chorus of Kumbaya." - by davio

Palm muting is fine but is limited for me. My thumb cannot do what my other fingers can do. I didn't mind screwing 2 screws in because I know this bass is a keeper Marvelas Something
davio
Neat idea if you aren't opposed to putting holes into your bass otherwise I'd rather palm mute also or use a piece of foam rubber. True. I've been thinking about getting some foam to put under my strings back by the bridge for some of the music I play with my funk band. Low impact and easily reversable is the name of the game. jeremy c
Here's a picture of my pea bass with foam under the bridge. (there's a little reflection of the foam on the body of the bass). http://www.jeremycohenbass.com/images/bassmute.web.JPG The mute is easily removable. The bass is a Fernandes copy. I put a Seymour Duncan vintage pickup in it and it has LaBella flatwound strings which have been on for a few years. I never plan on changing the strings. The bass sounds better every year and is the perfect studio bass (that's the only place I play it). Free download of my cd!.

Palm muting is fine but is limited for me. My thumb cannot do what my other fingers can do. Just in the interest of being informative, Rickenbacker has always had a foam mute stock on all of their 4000 series basses prior to the 4004 (which uses conventional Fender-style bridges). It sits on a metal plate that can be lifted up or down by twisting a couple of knobs. Most people don't even know it's there because it is well "hidden" in the tailpiece design. For all the flack their bridge/tailpiece takes for being "unconventional" (as 40-plus-year old designs go), they really pulled this part of it off very well--it definitely gets the job done. The foam mute is best for dub and upright mimicry, which I don't do a lot of, but occasionally will pull out... Just some Jeopardy Bass Edition trivia for anyone curious. jeremy c
Musicman basses had mutes on them for a while. You turned thumbscrews to bring the foam pads up to the strings. And of course a true vintage Jazz Bass would have mutes. Free download of my cd!.
b5pilot
Yeah I remember the old style Fenders had that piece of foam glued to the underside of the bridge cover. I also remember the Rics having that built in feature. Lydian mode?
