They will probably have other suggestions for instruction books as well. You will most likely get a lot more out of regular lessons with a teacher than you will out of a book. As for the rehearsal space...if you can afford it and enjoy playing with these kids, go for it. Are you not able to practise in somebody's basement, garage, church, etc? I've only paid for rehearsal space when the band was making enough on a regular basis to pay for gas, new merch purchases and the rehearsal space itself. I'd also suggest putting an ad up at your local music store or somewhere (we also have craigslist over here) saying that you're a beginner and want to find other people to play with and learn from.
