bloodyMary
I set up faster than my guitarist. It took a lot of practice, though, and a lot of compromising in terms of rig size/quality. Stage: MOX6, V-machine, and Roland AX7 Rolls PM351 for IEMs. Home/recording: Roland FP4, a few guitars

orangefunk
Damn gigging with a rhodes and SOLINA!! Yikes.. y'know I can handle the rhodes but damn giggin with a solina frightens me... those things are so fragile... tons of wires in the things.. But heck.. add an organ and that looks like the Johnny Hammond Smith (or indeed any keyboard player of that era) set up of the 70s... just need a ProSoloist ;-) That JX10 looks lovely btw... I'd have a lot of fun with that and the moog...

analogholic
It's tough to make out in the pics, but what did you end up doing to get the Mini up there? Yes, sorry about that. Forgot my camera, so one of the guitarists took some pictures with his cellphone. Cut and paste from an earlier post: I finally (due to lack of time) had to do sort of a "last resort" kind of thing this time. I took a Quiklok 2-tier X-stand, and reversed the second tier pointing out from the stand and then I turned the whole stand. Looked a bit weird, but did the job, since I had the Mini pretty much where I wanted it.(Could have been a little closer and a tad lower If I should be picky) I put a K-1000 on the lower tier (for our saxplayer) Also the mini was midied to the K-2000 and of course I wanted to tweak it easily. NewImprov
Yeah man, it´s a REALLY fun rig, but our leadguitarplayer always bugs me with the "why don´t you buy a laptop instead"-rap...and just because of that, I almost brought a Matchless-clone class A tubeamp for the Rhodes... I usually go: "Yeah, next time I´m bringing a Hammond and two Leslies...yeah right, I wish...someday The guys actually help me carrying the stuff...but hey, we gig 1-2 times a year with this band so... New&Improv, do you have a picture of your rig? Would be cool to see how you position the Mini I have an outdoor gig this weekend, I may take the Mini, and if I do, I'll snap some pix. I'm sure tuning will be a challenge, but otherwise, it's such a fun synth to have on the gig. I love the challenge of dialing in the sound in real time, it really makes you LEARN the front panel! And I play left hand bass in this band as well, so it makes for some really interesting hand independence issues, laying down a groove while dialing in a sound on the mini. So, Analogholic, what's your band like? With that setup, I can already tell I probably like your music :-) Turn up the speaker Hop, flop, squawk It's a keeper -Captain Beefheart, Ice Cream for Crow
Sven Golly
Cut and paste from an earlier post: Whoops, sorry I missed that post in all the gear-porn goodness... That's good solution, especially given the multi-instrumentalist nature of the project. Given the look of the stage, dare I guess you're in a Floyd tribute? Nothing in your profile to indicate if that's the case, or where you're located... do tell... us Floyd fans (and players) need to support one another! Also, what venue is that? I did a theater tour in Eastern Canada to do the Dark Side Of The Moon album with Classic Albums Live, and we did all theaters like that. Amazing gigs. Of course it´s a Floyd tribute! We did "Wish You Were Here" AND "The Dark Side Of The Moon" + some obligatory extras like "Brick Pt 2", with a bunch of school kids singing on the chorus. The venue is an old theatre in Gothenburg, Sweden (our hometown) A very "Great Gig" indeed. Totally sold out and a very enthusiastic crowd. Man, Pink Floyds music is still very popular. I was thinking about maybe getting one to spice up my P08 a bit. Is it a "toy" or is it serious buisness? Hmm, its a good question... I bought it for the dual purpose of regular fx and sampling.. its reverb is no lexicon but the combination of the fx (delay, filtering, bit crunching, etc..)with real time sampling is very addictive... its really ideally suited to bringing some electronic dance element to a live (or electronically backed) band I think... For that gig I had the Moog going into a Lexicon MX200 (I think its called)... and the RD700GX was going through the KAOSS pad.. the idea was that I would play regular piano stuff but then start looping things and adding filtering on the fly... I also had it loaded with some drum/phrase samples... However, the gig turned out to be a regular jazz/fusion date with covers of Metheny (Phase Dance), Hubbard (Red Clay), Abercrombie (Timeless), EST etc. as well as some jazzed up Radiohead (Everything in its Right Place). So I never got the chance to fool around with the pad like I normally would. So at least for the moment I have not done a gig that really utilises it... but I really felt we hit on a new kind of sound in rehearsals... Yikes.. y'know I can handle the rhodes but damn giggin with a solina frightens me... those things are so fragile... tons of wires in the things.. Got the impression that the Solina is built like a tank. Every band my dad played in the 70´s had one, and they were playing for a living, in other words all the time. Have you experienced any problems? That´s more what I grew up on, so my solos with the Floyd-gang smell much more of George Duke than Richard Wright Btw, I somewhere have a nice piece of yours called "Travels", which made want to buy a VL-1 right away All truth passes through three stages. orangefunk
yeah, I had problems with the octave divider chips and the keyboard mechanism.. I managed to get a few new ones from Ken Macbeth (of Macbeth Systems) and got it running again.. but heck there are a lot of wires in there... I got worried if even one of them came loose I wouldn't know where it came from.. so I sold it for a good profit.. Still its such a lovely sound... in many ways its the sound of I wanted in my youth, solinas, rhodes, arp, all those Mizell productions and Azymuth records... I was really crazy about that... Thanks for the comment on Travels... its the only piece I ever got right with the VL... I think much of the magic was becuase all improvised and recorded within one hour as a thread started on HC about just doing something quickly... whenever I sat down and thought about things it never seemed to work for me... I dunno... very strange...
analogholic
Just found and listened to Travels...you capture a real deep vibe in the beginning...reminds me of Jan Garbarek and then I get a Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays vibe when the drums are kicking in double tempo...I like it a lot! You know, when I was a little kid, my dream was that once I´m going to have a Rhodes, Solina and a D6 Clavinet All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. orangefunk
Hey thanks.. you summed it up really well... that late 70s Garbarek sound mixed with the Lyle Mays stuff... sometimes it just comes out and composes itself... mind you its only two chords so you can't got oo far wrong Yeah the Z1 has a nice Solina and some nice Arp lead sounds... check the solo over the Jamey Aebersold backing track... just me messing from years back but interesting sound.. analogholic
Man, you can really play! And the sounds are great, especially that Arp lead sound! Damn, I should dig up some Aebersolds myself... Too much fun with the synths, and not enough playing lately... orangefunk
Hey thanks! Its not my best (and would be way to long for a real track) I seem to recall Roald from HC was wanting me to play some Arp lead stuff on the Z1 and this was the first thing that came out...
