To me, this tends to clog things up, and can at times make what's going on unintelligable. I also feel like while there are some interesting things going on in this tune, it lacks a general cohesiveness to bring it all together.
I really don't know what to put here.
Originally posted by pauldil: Eljefe, I really liked "And We're Back". :thu: The whole performance had a great feel; tight but not too tight – just right. I enjoyed your solo. Very nice lines and you kept a good rhythmic variety. I really envy jazz players. My stuff is a little “jazz-flavored” but I’ve got too much respect for real jazzers to call it jazz, so I label it “smooth jazz”. That way, I don’t offend anyone… I’ve always been afraid of posting on this thread because everyone's stuff sounds so good and I don’t still know much about getting a good recording, but here goes anyways: This is a tune called "Early Morning" that I wrote a while back. I’m playing all the parts on a Roland GR-30 guitar synth except for the drums, which I played realtime with using my computer keyboard with the drum kit in Power Tracks. Paul
Yeah, what eljefe said. Way hot. I used to use Power tracks before going to Sonar, and it's a little light in the metering and control department. The composition is great, though. Sonar XL has the Dr008 drum sampler built in and I bet it would help out greatly.
I really don't know what to put here.

He was responsible for at least 50% of the playing, ideas and production. That's VORTEX. Don't mess with 'M, he'll make your world real dark baby! He'll build a pedal that'll make your mamma wish she never had you cause of the mess you're in! He'll play a guitar line so slinky it'll make your daddy question his sexuality. He'll crush your whole town with one note on that bass guitar!!!!!!!!! That's VORTEX. V O R T E X. sAY It saY IT.

"it lacks a general cohesiveness to bring it all together." right on =) was the idea. agreed, it is low to middy. "thank God" is better for cohesive composition, if curious. thanks for the ears.

I've been doing more lurking lately than participating so I thought I'd toss one up here. Here's a cover of an old Bobby Blue Bland tune that we do. http://home.centurytel.net/pontiacblues/Ain\'t%20Doin\'%20Too%20Bad%20112.mp3 So what do you think, would Mr. Bland approve?

I dig the "jammin'" blues solos and fills... I'm guessing this was recorded "live" or at least all at once? On my system the drums and vocals are a little less present than you might expect from a studio recording, it's more like when you're doing it live... but the playing is very good. I bet when you do this live, you get the people up out of their seats and dancin' right? Bobby would be pleased, I'm sure! :thu: guitplayer

The recording quality is fine, can you share a bit about your technique / system? Thanks for sharing! guitplayer
Thanks guitplayer! This was recorded on a VS880 V-Expanded. The drums are canned, from my PS series yamaha keyboard, recorded dry, EQ'd and reverb added when I mixed the music down to two tracks. Bass guitar was direct through DBX586 mic pre, electric guitars were direct, through the pre amp as well. I took advantage of the DBX's EQ section, while tracking each one, to contour the bass and distorted guitars to compliment each other. Acoustic got the same treatment mic'd with an AKG C1000s. Capsule pointed a bit away from the sound hole, about 4 inches from the 12th fret. Vocals went through the same pre, again with the C1000s. I can't remember the EQ settings, but they had a boost around 2k, and a small cut around 140h. The lead and harmony parts were doubled, with much attention to matching the phrasing, inflections, and volume. I remember having to make a mid range cut in those vocals to get the guitars back up front after they were tracked. The outro parts were generated by that same cheesy keyboard, played by me, one after the other, and then I added the acoustic. Thanks so much for listening, and giving me a chance to write about the tech side of it. -john

musicman: agreed with guitplayer, really nice stuff, great mix. encouraging to hear your set up, very smiilar to our studio =) excellent all round, composition, execution, mastering - you name it. time circus: nigel: hey! this is a fun sound. dunno if it's intentional but the funky pans bring out the fun in the music imho. i like all the voices, nice texture, lead voice is really good, and unique. like the song too, good fun. drummer could work his/her bass doubles a bit, but it doesn't detract and (s)he's mostly solid, if sometimes simple everywhere else (watch out ringo!) - great feel. loadsa flavour. basement funk: here we go. like it. creedence for the new millenium (hehe sawry). drummer sounds much more on it in blues, although solo section wavers a bit. singer is a little less comfortable here tho, still entertaining. still nice raw sound, i bet you guys sound great drunk(unless you are here hehe)/live in the right places. wish i could help more on the engineering advice. :thu:

Okay, here you go... I'll toss one out and see what you all think... ftp://basstardz.dhs.org/Upload/strive.mp3 My server's screwing up - they're changing a bunch of crud over, so it's temp being posted on a friend's ftp server. Anyway, the song is called "Strive". The band is called "Divide The Day" (formerly "Ripshaw"). They're unsigned (well, they're signed to me for a development / production deal), but pretty popular around here. They did a couple of LA area Warped Tour dates last year, so some of you may have heard of them. Anyway, I just thought I'd share a bit of one of the things I've been working on lately.

Sorry - try this. Go to: ftp://basstardz.dhs.org/Upload/ then in the open folder, right click on "Strive.mp3" and select "copy to folder". Select the folder you want on your computer and hit "okay". Once it's there you should be able to open it with your player of choice.
