Apparently 50 songs are selected a year (started in 2002) that are "culturally, historically or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States." Stumbled onto it from the Allman Brothers page on Wikipedia. It's interesting to look at the list (Whipping Post is on it, by the way). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_recordings_preserved_in_the_United_States_National_Recording_Registry I'm off to make sure that I've listened to all of them.
