  1. DON'T DO ANYTHING without doing some research to find out if it could have some value...

My older brother inherited an old sailboat with a cabin he bought and the week before he took a chainsaw to it, I asked him what it was -- lo and behold, 5 weeks later he was smiling while watching it be driven away on a trailer.  Of course, the fact that he has 20 brand new $100 bills in his hand helped the smile.

Come to think of it -- I never got my 10% fee!!!

  2. FOUR B3s live on one stage -- is that what heaven is like?!?

Watch and LISTEN to this master class on Hammond B3 soloing to this Jimmy Smith tune.

Featuring Dr. Lonnie Smith, Doug Riley, Joey DeFrancesco, and Paul Shaffer, all cookin' on the B3s.

Silence and sparse playing spaces are just as important as the sounds you make in between.

If I recall correctly, from an article in the YES magazine that I'd offered up to a lucky winner on this forum last year, that's almost a direct quote from Rick Wakeman himself.  He essentially said "what he didn't play" was often just as important to the arrangement as "what he did play".

That's an excellent example of "using your ears" and "not just your hands".

Had to read the title again, I first assumed you meant what keyboard (that has been discontinued) bugs you the most…I had a long list.

I see now you meant it bugged you because it had been discontinued. Still, nothing lasts for ever eh?

Gee, I'd have to say that I've always wanted a "new"...

    HAMMOND B3

...but my SK Pro is so much easier to lug than even my chopped M3 ever was -- it's about the same weight as the custom pre-amp box that I'd built.

Put a string on them like Ben Wa Balls and you can hang them off your stand.   You might make some new friends at gigs <grin>

Does anyone else now hear Chuck Berry singing "My Ding-a-ling" when viewing that image?

"2 balls on the end of a string..."

  6. Some great ideas above; the few ideas I had were already listed.  But maybe you can be BOLD and also mix in some songs about all the CrAzY PeOpLe and/or things that get affected by the moon -- Iron Man and Godzilla (the songs) come to mind, just to mix it up.

    That leads to:

    Crazy (Patsy Cline)

    Crazy Train (Ozzie)

    Crazy On You (Heart)

    ...and there's more for sure.

  7. The very real problem is...

If you or I or someone else started such a non "large corporation geared towards web monopoly and homogenization" video streaming service that became hugely successful to compete with "You-Tube, Facebook, Tik-Tok, or Instagram, and the like" -- we'd probably end up selling it to them and retire, and there'd be another one on your list.

But then again, would the mass social media market really want what we'd offer as an alternative?

  8. Having just returned from an  island vacation where the sand fleas made a feast of me.... (and ignored others in the group)

-->  Did you ever perform an outdoor gig and had applied Bug Spray or Lotion that had DEET in it???

-->  Or could another band mate had put some on and your keys got all the over-spray?

    Deet will EAT plastic!

On the island they recommended using "Picaridian" for bugs, as it is "Non-harmful to plastics or fishing line".

    That's my guess...  Deet.

  9. For some FREE and excellent "quick hits" for licks and tips on a Hammond, also check out the videos on youtube posted by:

    * Mike Little -- "Universe of Keys"

    * Nick Foley UK -- "Hammond For Hire"

Others may offer better courses, yes; but the price is right on those, and the quality is typically very, very good.

  10. My bandmates and I are all over 50 and waiting to "save what we have" as others have mentioned.  We've been really pleased with the Eargasm line of high-fidelity earplugs sold on Amazon.  They've very comfortable and do let the highs and full spectrum of sound come through -- without the volume, of course.

...ditching the high rent locations makes business sense.  Also customer have brought this on with the advent of the internet they would go to brick and mortar stores to check out gear, then go home get on the internet and buy it online to save a few bucks.

Man, I had a blast for those hours I spent over 2 days at their NYC store last summer checking out their various keyboards; many that I've only heard or read about or seen pictures of online.  I had posted many images of their extensive keyboards department on this forum too, as it was awesome (but expensive to support, I'm sure).

    It's a sad sign-of-the-times, yes, but understandable...

... it simply isn't as fun to use as a big old knobby synth. The interface of analog synths inspires you to mess around, experiment, and play! Until the issue of tactile inspiration can be solved, I don't think digital will replace analog.

With that physical nature of the 'real deal' comes an immediacy as well. A vintage...

Right. The fun factor and immediacy in analog sound design is inspiring and it sparks creativity. Those factors cannot be discounted.😎

Call me old school -- and you'd be correct -- but for all those reasons above, I don't ever see myself playing virtual instruments from a computer as I really enjoy having a purpose-built keyboard in front of me.

To me, I find there's a very strong mental connection to the board as well (tradition, history, reliving past gigs, old songs or sounds to emulate, pride of ownership, etc.), besides all the physical aspects of the keys, knobs, and sliders, etc.

Plus, after 9 to 11 hours spent on a work computer every day, the very LAST thing I want to do is to start up yet another computer...................  Ugh...

    First make a mistake.

    Then repeat it.  ;)

I think one of the jazz greats said if you do it that way, then it sounds deliberate (and I probably read that comment on this forum too).

I was thinking this post was going the way of "outside" -- in the sun, in the c-c-c-cold, the threat of rain, etc.

The internet gave everyone a chance to speak, but it didn't give them the wisdom to know when to speak...or when to shut up. It's part of our culture now...

    Oh, that's a great quote! 😉

I will use it on some other forums I frequent where they're overrun with vitriolic diatribe.

In a public setting, as you started to say something stupid, off putting or offensive, you'd see folks rolling their eyes or squirming in their seats and your "self edit" capability might get kicked up a notch or two.

THAT'S what missing on the web...

Folks type 3 to 4 sentences, or paragraphs, of such stuff with "no editing done" -- and possibly, very little critical thought beforehand too.
