I almost gave up on the YC pianos as I couldn’t connect despite being a long time Yamaha piano user. Connected a weighted piano to it today and wow. So it’s very much how the sounds respond to a weighted keybed. I know @NosPup isn’t a piano player, but if you really want to enjoy digging in to AP’s and EP’s might be worth trying a weighted board.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll certainly give that a try. Although I’ve gotten to a pretty good place with the velocity settings now, so I’m not as concerned.

re: volume. you need to be sending a +4 level signal to the Altos. That typically would be the balanced XLR out if your keyboard has one (yammie CP88 for example).  Otherwise if they are 1/4" unbalanced out, they are most likely at -10db level (sometimes higher), then you'll need another gain stage via a small mixer or line driver.  Headphone jacks are at speaker level which is a whole 'nuther thing and can easily overdrive/distort another downstream input without careful gain staging.

re: coverage. assuming you're in mono, you could always buy a 3rd speaker set them up in a tight cluster with one facing forwards, one off-axis left and one off-axis right.  seems like overkill, but pretty sure folks will hear you.

D Gauss is correct. And I should mention this is not an Alto problem. I have experienced similar with  JBL eons and QSC speakers also.

Which Altos are you talking about? On my TX308s there's only a single input trim control. Turning it clockwise increases the input sensitivity to where it can work with mic level signals. I can easily drive my Altos to full power and more with this control, directly from the headphone output of my i-device or laptop. I can't imagine the line out from a keyboard not able to do the same.

Ts308 for me. I can’t keep up with rock drums and 2 guitars without going through a mixer to send the Alto a hotter signal.

  4. Does anybody have any favorite touch settings they are using on the YC61 for acoustic piano?  I just can’t seem to find an ideal place between soft, normal, and hard settings. I haven’t dug into the new curves yet.
Just as a reference, I’m more of a synth guy, not a pianist, so I’m not requiring  a weighted action. I’ve been happy on Nord electros and older Roland’s like the xp30. I like everything else on the YC, but I’m just not yet connecting  with the AP’s.

  5. I'm about 99% certain I used the existing bolts.  It is slightly finicky to change beacuse the bolts want to fall out, but its nice to not be looking for a wrench.  You may also notice a slight "shift" how the leg sits inside the other telescoping  leg when using these knobs.  It feels a bit weird when first going in, but it is still totally solid when playing.  You can really crank these knobs in with just your hand, and they are definitely not coming loose when I tighten them.  I never had the faintest thought of going back to the regular nuts if thats valuable to anyone.

I am in agreement with some on this thread that I love love love this stand.  Its literally about 5 seconds to set up.   I also really like walking in, popping the stand open and "marking my territory" on stage.  I can get this thing in place even before the bass player drops his amp and goes to the bar...

Nice. Can you possibly post a source for the knobs? Or any relevant sizing info?

I likewise rarely want to change the height, but it would be nice to make it a quick job when needed. This (or the pin idea) would seem to take care of Bobadohshe's issue with the stand, and MathOfInsect's biggest issue with it as well.

Looks like i got them from the ole amazon. i bought in May 2017 so i've been using them for over 5 years without any problems.   Here's a link.

The height on the K&M 18880 can be easily adjusted by simply replacing 4 bolts with quick release pins.  At the gig, before opening it up all the way, place it upside down for easy access, pull the two pins on one leg, slide to where you've marked your fave spot for the purpose, and pop the pins back in.  Repeat for the other leg.

I just can't stress how easy this stand is to set up.  Ten seconds, literally.  Spread it out, plop it down, tighten the two knobs on the scissors brace.

Drill a few holes to fix the limited adjustment on tiers.

The biggest limitation is if you want it very short AND want your tiers very close, because the tier bottom inserts hit the tops of the feet inserts, inside the leg tubes.  That's fixable too, with a hacksaw, but then you won't be able to set the tier as high as before.  Pick your compromise.

The only other thing I wasn't delighted with is that the tubes clack inside the other tubes.  Fixed with electrical tap around the ends of the insert tubes.

Best stand ever.  After losing mine I replaced it right away.

    Forgive the necropost.

Thanks for the info. What did you use for the quick release pins?  I replaced with knobs on mine, but your idea is better !

  8. i happen to be sitting next to an MKS-30 right now!  It has some voice chip problems so I have been debating whether to buy replacement chips or not. It always had a great sound.  I might need to get this running again so i can entertain the Kiwi option!!!

  9. Im another North Jerseyan!  (but now in Central NJ).

In high school, there used to be a back way into that Sam Ash that would drop you in the parking lot for the next store, but right next to it.  I think it was off Farview?  And there was also another place nearby for a while.  I think it was Muscially Yours or something like that.

Im sure the people at Sam Ash and Victors loved me spending hours in there and never buying anything!  Especially Victors when it was small in the middle of Ridgewood.

  10. I use the KP-408 in a fairly loud rock band.  My keys go through a Key Largo and then into the MotionSound, but i have tons of head room. I'm probably running the Master at around 65% max and the channel volume at 65% max and still have plenty of volume for mid-sized rooms.  For these setups I keep it low to the ground so it doesnt blow me away.  I assume it would be somewhat less without the Key Largo as a pre-amp.  For a really large room you'd definitely want to go through a PA, but the MotionSound can get obnoxiously loud if you want.  Even with the 408, i tend to roll off the bass eq a bit to stay away from the bass player.
