  1. Unless it's a high profile or high paying gig I opt for convenience. If the rig sounds alright and I play good that night, in the end that's all that matters. If I get in and out of the venue faster and easier my stress level is reduced and I can live to fight another day.

This is exactly the sort of mentality I have adopted over the years.I have a Nord Stage 3 and with the samples and synth section worked on for several months, I ended up with a set for two acts that I play in. The sounds are good enough for small venues with oversize bass and guitar amps the suppress even the drums, but for larger venues where I have less worries about the stage sound mixing with PA, I carry a second board (a Nord Lead A1 or Yamaha MX49, depending on the type of gig), even a third (a Moog Subsequent 37) at times. Most of the time, I find myself comping with my main board, and I play the others three or four times during the whole show.

It's a wholly different story in the studio though...

  2. I play, among others, a trio of keyboards, guitar, drums, with me on LH bass. We usually open with an instrumental, Green Onions, Blue Monk (usually tied to Everyday I Have The Blues), or a swing standard. In our last gig, we did a swing version of Billie Jean, Moon Over Bourbon Street, some slow T-Bone Walker blues, etc. It all depends on the crowd, if we are playing in a small dinner bistro, it's more jazz oriented, if it's more like a club, we include faster shuffles and some classic rock-ish tunes (eg Black Magic Woman).
  3. There is one at the studio that we had our rehearsals, and I played it a couple of times when I didn't want to carry my rig. Bad decision... If you are planning to play anything similar to a piano, the touch is way too light for that. I didn't like it on organ patches either, too springy at release, but feels like a pound of steak when you press them.
  4. I have a problem with ear wax buildup which I resolve with drops.

I would warn ANYONE against the destructive washing out by doctors/nurses - my experience was dreadful and I had worsened tinnitus for months on end.

Use drops, take your time. It works eventually.

Two drops of glycerine in each ear helps soften the wax, in 24 hours some of it just oozes out. Washing is not done anymore unless there is an absolute medical necessity, it harms the eardrum with the high pressure waterjet.

  5. Im using a Macbook Air mid-2015, 2.4 GHz i7, 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD. It should be enough for anything but XL samples, but two synth layers with Arturia V (synclavier and dx7) killed the cpu. It may be the Focusrie 2i2 Scarlett USB, but I gave up at that point. I might use the small Roland jdxi for some synth sounds (it sounds good enough for small venue gigs), but I have to get the laptop solution worked out, especially for out-of-town gigs that I have to travel by air.
  6. Just recently completed a 3 month international contract with a band. Where I ran everything 100% mainstage. It was my first ever full mainstage live performance. Not one glitch or problem throughout three months performances.

However before the first gigs started I ran it through many tests, played through the sets regularly to sort of bed the laptop in.

Things I noticed during the 3 months:

As mainstage displays the setlist quite nicely on a retina screen, I often had band members look on my screen to get a glance of the upcoming songs.

It was very convenient to drag and drop songs into different orders each night.

Running tracks, loops, several layers, splits was all so easy. Everything was assigned to midi keyboard. My kybrd has next and previous buttons so just hitting those moved me to the next song or set easily.

Don't run mainstage on battery. Just don't. Had my power supply in at all times. During testing I found the battery mode to just cause mainstage to be unstable. Not sure why.

But yeah the ease of use, customization, on the fly set and song changes made it so easy.

Do you use an external sound card, or go with the internal audio? I've been having problems with an external sound card re latency (I'm trying to use a couple of Arturia V collection synths.)

  7. I split the Nord Stage 3 for bass on the E1-E3 range, but I also use a lead synth (Nord Lead A1 or Moog Subs37) on top. I have prepared song settings for LH bass and a piano, e piano, B3, and some pads, and I can shift seamlessly on the NS3.
  8. Hi Guven! Nice to have a Turkish fellow here. I come to Istanbul quite often (like 3-4 times a year since 2005) as i play with a turkish artist, and i love this city. I hope to have a beer next time there. Welcome to the forum

Thanks a lot, let's definitely do it next time you're here :)

  9. Hi, I'm Guven from Istanbul, Turkey, nearly half a century old, having classical piano training and having gone the synth way afterwards. I mainly play blues and rock, although sometimes I have to play older pop songs and some jazz standards. My current rig is Yamaha Motif XF6, Moog Little Phatty Stage II, Nord Stage EX 76, Korg CX3 (new version) and Alesis QS6.1. And a s**tload of soft synths, growing every day...
