  1. Yes, the Hammond EXP 50 is a great pedal with the SK1 in terms of feel and sensitivity. And it is built well. One issue, however. The connecting cable is very lightweight and thin---not what you'd expect to be attached to such heavy-duty pedal. I noticed this shortcoming right away after purchase. My cable, despite great care, crapped out after 150 gigs (happened right near where the cable enters the pedal box. I gerry-rigged a fix while waiting months for Hammond to send a replacement cable. Ultimately, Hammond did right by me and, as they did not get any new supply of cables from Japan, Hammond sent me a whole new pedal. It had the same thin cable when I got it, however, so I immediately wrapped about a 1-inch section of it (immediate to the pedal box) with some of that self-fusing electrical tape). Just trying to reinforce it and apply a little preventive voodoo.

Thanks, good to know, gotta check out that - every once in a while.

  2. Just ordered an SK1. I see I can buy an EXP 50 expression pedal from Hammond for £139. However, I could also buy a Yamaha FC7 pedal for £59. Now, I use an FC7 on another keyboard, and I love it.

Has anyone A/B'd these two pedals, or are there any advantages that the EXP 50 has over the FC7?

The advantages would have to be fairly significant for me to shell out well over twice the price!

    Thanks,

Well, the Hammond pedal is just much better - in response, and as being said earlier, built like a tank. But, it's quite heavy too. If you got the bucks, buy it.

  3. Updated yesterday without any problems. As the manga-guide advices I only had to copy 5 files to the usb stick.

This update really makes a big difference, once you adjust a bit to the new touch. Very nice job, H-S.

Now, the next update should deal with the overdrive. Another nice thing would be the ability to switch extra voices on and off with the foot switch or damper pedal.

  4. Goldfinger - the first Bond I ever saw. Actually in Sweden, when staying with relatives there. We were about 11 -12 years old, me and my second cousin. I still remember the trailer of "Planet of the Apes" that preceded the movie. Saw that later on the telly. Not such an everlasting memory, that one. But still fun.
  5. LFO is like an LFO on a synth - you can assign one of four waveforms (Tri, Sqr, Saw, Sample & Hold) to sweep the filter. In the MANUAL mode you control the filter from the extra voice/drawbars effects amount pots, using the knob like a cutoff filter pot on a synth.

The nice thing is that you can adjust the sensitivity, resonance, waveform, rate and center frequency, and save those parameters in a patch (as well as the control source).

  6. Thanks, Wolvesparade for Your warmly welcoming words. And, yes, I've been a bit slowish on the introduction side of matters.

It's beautiful here, but the weather is somewhat inconstant. Friday (Midsummers' eve, a big holiday here) we had about 25 C and sunny. Yesterday and today about 13 and some rain. Hoping for some sun tomorrow, though.

    Kind greetings.

  7. Hi,

Maybe it's time for a short (?) introduction, since I find this forum very helpful and friendly.

JE62 (first names initials & year of birth). I live in Helsinki, Finland.

    About here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katajanokka

I started with classical piano lessons, followed by blues, rock etc. playing. I've been into jazz and bossa nova for some 15 - 20 years. Had a bit of gear over the years, but I always had to trade or sell to get new better or worse gear. Here's a list of my past gear (as far as I remember:)

    Hellas Figaro

    Lira 49 PRS

    Farfisa VIP 233

    Viscount Intercontinental M50

The Sk-1 is my only pro instrument for the time of being - still got that Finnish-made Walton Organ in a corner. But I wish I still had the CS-5...hope my list didn't bogart this thread:) too much.

    Best greetings,

  8. I've been looking into this thing about having to push a fav button twice to get the tonewheel-set that is programmed in the patch. Strangely enough, the below mentioned method seems to make the fav buttons work:

    1. Edit the DRAWBAR/Btype parameter and be sure to push enter, so that the parameter (Btypex)stops flashing - do not push record yet.

    2. Go via the Menu/exit button back to PATCH and record the changes from the P.NAME menu

Changing the Leslie type seems to require the same steps. The instructions in the manual, p.84 only seems to overwrite the Leslie presets.

Sorry, but this worked only momentarily. After fiddling with the Custom tonewheels, I seem to be back in square one.

  9. Yes, I fully agree. The greater arc of travel is why I chose the Exp-50. I haven't really tweaked that much the overdrive settings yet, except for lowering the amount in some customized patches I use. Will try out the Ep-amp on organ sounds - I definitely liked it when I built a dirtyish Rhodes. Works nicely, boosting the low end.
  10. The overdrive is nothing to write home about, if you exceed certain levels, where the distortion becomes obvious. I have the Exp-50 expression pedal. It's very good, but was it worth some 118 dollars more, compared to the yc. Guess i'll never know:) However, i don't see, how the pedal could affect the quality of the overdrive.
  11. I copied this from another topic:

It seems like the programming for the patch recording may have started out using some XK-3 code where different tonewheel types can be saved to individual presets but the last tonewheel set saved for a given type is then used in all presets that use that type. This was changed in the '3c so that both type and specific set can be saved to each preset. Maybe the change in the XK-3 to '3c software needs further tweaking. What seems to happen now is that a specific tonewheel type and tonewheel set within the type can be saved to each user patch but when selecting a different patch the type changes but the tonewheel set doesn't.

Edit: I organized the tonewheel sets/patches to better see what happens.

When using the Favorites buttons to select patches, if the active patch uses Mellow #3 and the new patch uses B-Type2 #4, it will call up B-Type2 #1 when the corresponding button is pressed. Pressing it again changes it to B-Type2 #4. If the next Favorite button contains any other B-Type2 tonewheel set it loads the correct set. If the next patch selected uses a different type of TW it will call up that type and the #1 set. Pressing the button again will call up the set that was saved to that patch.

Selecting patches by scrolling to them via the knob seems to always call up the type and specific set saved to that patch.

When changing from a patch using a Type1 set to a Type 2 set I have had occasions where the type xhanged but the selected set # stayed as it was and didn't revert to #1 before going to the saved set on the second press. The end result is when changing to patches using different tonewheel sets, always press the Favorites button twice to make sure you end up with the set you want.

    Hi,

I bought a SK-1 a few days ago, and the keyboard shows exactly this behaviour.

I updated the instrument with the latest system (release 4), and i don't know if this is a "feature" of the update - i didn't pay any attention to this before upgrading.

I wonder if earlier versions of the system has this bug. Hopefully HS will correct this - even if it maybe isn't such a big issue.

In every other aspect I am quite happy with my purchase, including the Exp-50 Expression Pedal.
