You're right. The guy that pressed start on the potato fryer should net twice the money as the guy that entertained you for 4 hours playing difficult music. (Sarcasm).

Music appreciation (either due to the influence of the rubbish being streamed or arts funding cuts in schools) is at an all time low.  Not all but I think the majority of the population out there just doesn't appreciate the time and effort it takes to become a true professional musician.  Many likely think it's a "fun" hobby and the really good players are all natural talent with minimal effort put in so why should they be paid well for it?

  2. I've been doing my own taxes for 15 years now.  Multiple Schedule Cs for both music gigs and my motorcycle business.  Key to avoiding an audit is to make sure you don't report too many losses especially in consecutive years.  I don't think I've ever reported a loss but I definitely know my depreciation schedules and other writeoffs.  Most tax software calculates this for you.  I use a free program that basically just crunches the numbers to make sure there aren't any mathematical errors which can also trigger an audit.

    Is anyone running Hauptwerk?

I have it for gigs on laptops as a plugin hosted by Cantabile, with effects.

Also run it on PC for both my studios as standalone.  The one in the organ studio is hooked to an analog 3 manual drawknob Rodgers with a MIDI interface added. The synth studio one is just added via MIDI to hardware synths and has an extra push controller for presets.

I played a concert on a Hauptwerk setup and wasn't that impressed but that was 10 years ago.  I'm sure their sampling is much better now.

Had an Emax for while in the late 80's.  It probably had the same sample set from the E II.  I remember the pipe organ sample to me sounded excellent.  My church at the time had a 26 rank pipe organ -- https://pipeorgandatabase.org/instruments/59809#stoplists.  While I thought the Emax sample was very convincing, the music/choir director who cranked that real pipe organ up every Sunday wasn't convinced.  That thing could shake the neighborhood.

Pipe organs have very quick attack, no decay and little to no modulation, so short looped samples can do the trick quite well.  The real trick, as stated, is capturing it properly and the fact that each installation sounds different.

I play a 26 rank tracker organ at one of my churches but it doesn't sound "big" like this sample.  Really curious which pipe organ they sampled for this sound.

  5. Finally figured out that David Rosenthal used an E-mu Emulator for the pipe organ sound on the intro to Rainbow's "Can't Let You Go".  This sampler only had 2 KB of memory!  Only pipe organ sample I've heard that comes close is the Sanctuary preset in my Alesis QSR module.  How could they come up with such a realistic sample whereas most of  today's ROMpler offerings fall short?

  6. Skipping most of it with the DVR right now.  Just stopped for Stevie Wonder's performance.  Couple more hours to get through.

At least Metallica won a Grammy for best metal performance this year unlike 1989!

I was premature; I received my 1099-K form from eBay today. I guess they reported everything before Congress delayed the enactment of the new rules, yet again.

When I do my taxes, I'll do what I did the past two years, and write an explanatory note to the IRS that I am saving them money by not declaring losses.

Some of the posters are confused because they think these rules are about people's amortization or resale of business deductions. It is 100% unrelated to that.

This was a simple money grab, akin to instituting a VAT in the USA. But lobbying our representatives has helped kill it for three years in a row, except for paperwork.

I forget the exact threshold, but it doesn't take much to meet it. I think $600, or 20 sales of any value? I often resell books or comics, also at a loss.

I'm not a business, and I don't claim any business expenses. I did for a few years when I made $10K+ at music, and I did the proper Schedule C etc.

To reiterate, this isn't about that, but it can be confusing as you may have to fill those same forms to offset 1099-K, as though you were a business.

The mechanisms were already in place for people to be honest about reporting business losses and gains. The new online sale rules are ignorant.

Got mine today too!  I'm running a business, though so no big deal.  MACRS depreciation will write off most of the 1099 amount.  Yep, I went to school for accounting although I'm not a CPA.

I guess that threshold must vary by state, OP.  That sucks.

Yes, they predicted this based on Goff the superior QB.   I knew SF should never have rested their team for the Bye.

Niners are going to need to revamp their defense and find a real QB next year.   Also expect Shanahan to be fired.

Game isn't nearly over yet, lol.

The whole issue for me is why is an individual selling used personal property not a business considered taxable income????   If I sell a car privately instead of trading it in is that taxable income????    They need to establish when is an individual selling used personal property considered a business.   They need to set a number of transactions within a year and under that number your a individual.

Like when relatives want to give a car or other high ticket item to a family member they instead sell it to the person for one dollar.   Then they are selling the car not gifting the car and avoid the gift tax. People will find way around this they alway do.

They did before when it was 200 transactions per year, starting next year it's only one.  Not sure about this year but supposedly the dollar amount threshold is $5k.  This is going to get political really fast.

It was interesting to listen to Gronk and Edelman reminisce about how intimidating Hoodie was, and they never knew what mood he’d be in or if they dared to even speak in meetings.    They were all frightened of him.  I’m sure even Hernandez was afraid of him, and he was a psychopathic serial murderer!

I don’t think that type of intimidation flies these days.    Even Andy, as old school as he is, is a players coach and they love him.   It’s a little bit like how Phil Jackson had to be purged out of the NBA because he couldn’t. deal with the new breed of player.

I seriously doubt any owner wants to deal with an old codger who will be nothing but headaches day in and day out.  Yes he has the resume, but it has expired, and he probably isn’t the best interview in convincing an owner that he is their future.

I’m glad that God clipped his wings when he did, and getting to Shula’s record is not gonna happen.

    His time has passed.
