Yes, many times, & probably earlier than almost anyone else here (I first saw him w/Nice in a small local bar in Buffalo).  What is your point?  It's still a zero sum game imho.  I've not yet seen a plethora of piano teachers offering "Standing or Sitting options".

Great, but not everyone is playing piano on stage. And even some that do stand. If it's a classical or jazz quartet, fine. If not, stand if you like. The Piano Police won't arrest you.

There's the music and there's the visual.   Yes, it's called Show Business, but the keyboard part of the music is better seated, & the show is better standing, jumping around, costumed, etc.

If you're doing any of the latter, the music suffers. It may be a necessary evil to make a living in these times, but let's not pretend it is anything other than sacrificing some of the music  for the visual.

Did you ever see Keith Emerson?

  4. I don't get it: usually music isn't learned from a book, and for the keyboard player to aspire to the centre role in a band, there's hardly use for music books, presuming you know your scales, harmonic theory and some generalities of various music styles and rhythms. I don't think I missed opportunities to talk to organ/keyboard/piano teachers of significant education and think it was also natural for me to learn from fellow keyboardists. So music theory and example music can and should be learned from books, but playing your instrument is something to learn more from practice. Group dynamics, ensemble understanding, licks question and answer, and God knows what all there is to learn for more advanvcd keyboardists shouldn't be put in a book, I think.

That's classical players out the window then

  5. I played some goth / alternative / fetish clubs such as Torture Garden a few years back, with the Texas Chainsaw Orchestra. All sorts going on around the place but without fail all very polite and safe environments, where the artists were treated with respect.

I'll take that any day over the boozed up coked up random pub crowd

In retrospect, the extra voices feature was a bit of a half-assed attempt to move in on Nord's territory, and in the intervening years, they've spent almost zero time and investment expanding or improving the library (reed organ, handbell, anybody?). During the same period, Nord has released several new grand pianos alone.

It could be, of course, that the amount of memory in the SKs just wasn't sufficient for decent size samples I'm not sure how much memory there is on an SK but I'm guessing the fact that Hammond never mentions it means it's negligible compared with its Scandinavian counterpart.

Of course, it could be that the reason Hammond hasn't bothered much with the current SK library is that it realised its limitations and decided to work on a new library for a more capacious successor (the SKX?). Let's hope so.

Absolutely. I use a few of the SK2 EV's but there's plenty on there I wish I could swap out for something more useful - like that awful "jet noise" synth. And unless I'm mistaken you have to delete the whole EV group, you can't switch out individual ones?

  7. hey folks, weeks ago some users were talking about the center point stereo spacestation, I'm planning to buy a keyboard amp and it interests me, however is seems so small, I usually play hard rock zeppelin and deep purple-like, I imagine the high distorted guitars and loud drums covering all the keyboard sound, isn't it like that? I mean, I would like it to compete at least with an marshall mg50 up to 10

My other option is to buy Behringer Ultratone K3000FX, I've read very good reviews of it and its price and power is very very convincing

    What do you think?

Don't buy the Behringer! Had one a couple of years back. wouldn't recommend tehm at all. For rock groups when I'm not using a rotary I use a Peavey KB5

  8. Hi Phil M , I have a sk1 and a kind of that problem ...

It was working normal , and suddenly when I turn it on , the display shows the welcome message " HAMOND SK1 gloriou's voices " for about 5 min , and then when finally starts, everything works normal but it doesn't have any sound in any output .

I tried to restor to the factory settings , but doesn't help , and also I tried to upgrade a latest version but it shows me don't need to upgrade ( or something ) so it doesn't help too .

I would like to downgrade , as you said , but don't know how to get the old software . Is possible to download for the Hammond page ? Or is possible that you can send me ?

Thank you for the tips !

    This may help

    SK2 sound problem

  9. last week at a gig my sk1-73 cut out - still powered up lights on etc but nothing coming out of it - running mono out through my vent...

I come back on stage and all of a sudden it is working again - ?!?

has anyone experienced anything like this?

Yep, had exactly this happen too

    SK2 Sound Prolem

My SK2 is currently back at Hammond in the Netherlands, last info I had they thought it might be "one of the smaller ic components. This will mean a board replacement"

thanks for the input and link - so did yours function properly again afterwards? mine has been perfect since then...

what is a "smaller ic component? and when you say board replacement is that as in keyboard or as in circuit board?

    Hi

The SK2 is now back and working fine - Hammond UK said it was down to "a power supply component issue"

    cheers

  10. It was intermittent for a couple of weeks, then there was no sound permanently. Luckily I had the XK1 as back up.

I don;t know lol, that was what the guys at Hammond UK told me - I've had to send it away to them to get it fixed. No idea what causes it, the organ is flight-cased and handled well. When I get it back I'll let you know what the problem was

the sound guy said he had a friend that ended up sending his sk1 back because one of the outputs went dead...

  12. Can anyone help with low volume on some of the extra voices on the SK2? In particular I'm using one of the synth sounds for Shine on You Crazy Diamond, having trouble getting a decent level out of it. Thanks!

Oh - and just looking at the latest library download...jazz guitar?!?! Is there anyone who would use that? How about some more synth or orchestral sounds?

  13. Hi folks!

Long time lurker here, hope to start posting a bit more and joining in the fun....

My name is Rob Poyton, late 40s (how did that happen!). Started playing piano as a kid, jopined my first band at 18 - playing a Godwin organ and Roland string machine!

Currently working pretty much full-time in music, dividing my time between a Deep Purple tribute, various function / soul bands and an originals surf / garage outift as well as a goth rock outfit 13 Candles! Also planning on writing / recording an album later this year (purely self indulgent)

Love all things Hammond - the usual heros, Jimmy Smith, Jon Lord, etc. Have had the pleasure of meeting Brian Auger and Don Airey recently, both outstanding players and true gentlemen!

Still have my old chopped T200 that I gigged with in the 80s and recently sold a chopped H100 (too heavy to gig!).

Most times now I go out with an XK1 and a Solton Turbo rotary amp, use Roland / Korg synths for strings, piano, etc

    cheers!

    Rob
