  1. upvoted your idea CG. Seems like it's kind of similar to mine, but yours is much more thoroughly explained. It'd be useful if "USB audio to EXT" were available/possible: https://yamahasynth.ideascale.com/c/idea/286641

Also, being able to store USB audio volume level per live set would be cool. Saw that idea on there somewhere. Currently USB audio level defaults to 64 and I assign an expression pedal to adjust that parameter once live set is open.

I spent waaaay too long playing with one at NAMM a few years back. Such a cool instrument. Some of the voices are amazing and do cool things when you slide back towards the back of the key. Thought it'd be fun to gig with in a band situation but I guess you've actually worked with it at some length and came to a different conclusion.

I guess I'll have to go back to dreaming about a clav with the ken rich whammy bar.

Heh, Continuum doesn’t belong in this thread probably. The disappointment is me not making time to play it combined with the steep learning curve and price!

  3. Haken Continuum, not that it’s not beautiful and fun to play with.. but it’s kind of like starting to learn violin at age 50. Programming your own sounds on Eagan matrix interface or just modifying presets requires much research and it’s a very sensitive fretless kb with additional axes so playing is a slippery experience. Haven’t had time to dig in, maybe at age 50 I’ll start. (next year)

I have to respectfully disagree with Rustar. I used Wizard for many years, had a premium account with them all the way back from '95 to 2018. for me, my studio,  and my band.

I'll spare you the  gory details, and Cole (owner) may have gotten the place back on track., but for synths & keys, try Logical Sound.  https://www.logicalsound.com/

Fair prices, and they have couple really great synth techs there.

Been to Logical’s newish location? Things have gone way downhill in recent years. I’ll spare you the details ;)

Each of the three sections (organ, keys a, keys b) can be set to be played from internal keys, external keys, or both. Each user preset (Live Set) can be set however you want.

I've been wondering if there's a way to assign USB audio, like an iOS synth, to external keys. Looks like it might be an "Advanced Zone" situation?

Played a show last night with the new update and organ sounded excellent. Not going to be needing B3-X anymore but will still be using other VST's occasionally.

  6. I have a few weighted keyboards relevant to this thread. Probably ought to let a couple of them go.

FP10, I've had a few years, and it's a handy very low weight option to have, with PH4 "Standard" action I guess. Other than the occasional random clunky noise, it plays real well. Midi into Nord Stage 3 compact with this was very nice, but requires Kenton midi usb host or similar.

VPC1, I've spent more time fixing than playing it, but it's my favorite action for practicing. It has a slip tape issue that keeps popping up and keys gradually start sticking and get worse over time. May have to Ravenscroft it myself. Haven't tried MP11se, would like to. Tried VPC1 with NS3 for awhile, and it didn't play along nicely. Velocity weirdness.

YC88, my main ride, since VPC1's out of commission currently. First impression was the action is heavy, but it's the fastest of the 3. I no longer have NS3c but YC88 does well with NS2, though the Yamaha CFX is as useful as any Nord offering.

Had Nord Grand for awhile, and we didn't get along so well, but am curious to see how relatively recent firmware update with added velocity adjustments affected playability.

As awesome as the YC88 is, I'm tempted to sell it and just use FP10 + Nord for live shows and VPC1 at home (once it's fixed), because FP10 is so easy to transport. But USB audio interface on YC88 will probably keep it around. Looking forward to Yamaha updating firmware on YC88, soon maybe.

Also, Would getting down to say 32 make it possible to track a vocal without using the direct-through feature of many recording interfaces?

Thinking I'd stick with direct-through feature regardless? (for immediacy) Unless applying a plug-in compressor/reverb/etc. helps vocal performance. My RME has built-in effects for tracking in TotalMixFX but haven't tried it.

Well, I went ahead and ordered the newest 14" MBP, 32GB/2TB/10c. Future proofed, for a good while at least. And, most importantly, won't be spending hours a day window shopping and researching! Thanks all.

  8. My Windows PC performs well other than the occasional crackle, but is slowly growing some whiskers. (4690k CPU, 16GB RAM) Thought about upgrading motherboard/CPU/RAM but instead I'm looking to get an M1 MacBook.

Money is an issue, but I may be ignoring that and am thinking about springing for 2021 14" M1 Pro, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, 10 core. The convenience of extra ports, portability, being future proof as possible and 2X reading speed on SSD are the main motivation behind this choice.

At the same time, I've been keeping an eye on eBay/craigslist/Apple Refurbished for a 2020 M1 MBP or Air, with 2TB SSD and 16GB RAM. This would be the wiser choice financially and may be almost as future proof, given my needs.

I'll be using MacBook for MainStage with various virtual instruments (Garritan, Modern U, Keyscape, Omnisphere), Logic or Reaper (20 - 30 tracks max) and that's about it.

For these purposes, do you think the 2021 MBP is overkill? I hear multi-core performance is not as important as single core when dealing with music production, and the 2020 models may do just as well. And also seems like I've heard the faster SSD will just load samples into RAM faster, but M1 chip will perform just as well on 2020 MBP's once loaded. 32GB RAM may be the main draw for future proofing. I'm also not sure 10 core instead of 8 core is necessary, on newest MBP.

I've been reading forums and watching YouTube for days and and any input is helpful. Thanks.

  9. The last few weeks I've been wondering how to have Nord Stage 2 button drawbars controlled by YC88's "real" drawbars. (both kbs have fixed cc on drawbars). Have been thinking KeyStage and iPad pro could be the answer, but don't want to have to use a hub with iPad Pro. After reading about MODX MIDI possibilities, YC88 to iPad, along with midi din out to Nord Stage 2 might do the trick? Doubtful but maybe.

Other possibilities: 1. Buy a Macbook Air & usb both keyboards to it. Would be nice to have Garritan and Modern U portable and am curious to try MainStage, Keyscape, Omnisphere etc. 2. Sell Nord Stage 2 and try to find a NS3 & stick to using just hardware. 3. Live with NS2's button drawbars or a hub. Buying a hub for iPad might be wisest choice fiscally speaking.

  10. Here is the deal on the FP 10 sound. Through good pair of phones the AP sample is very good.

I do not care if it doesnt have 1/4 inch out either. When I want to amplify it I use a mini plug to RCA and it goes into my Yamaha mixer.

I have been spending more time with it lately and am caring less and less about spending extra money on the FP30x.

Yes, it does sound decent thru headphones. Could"ve been some other variable involved w/ my fp10+k12 debacle.

  11. Tried 1/8' out to QSC k12 at a small piano only gig once & that was a comical mistake.

Can you elaborate? I find the lack of 1/4" outs stupid, but I have no issues going from the headphone output of my MacBook Pro to my QSCs. Is the headphone amp of the FP10 that bad? You should easily be able to drive the QSCs to full volume with the output of any typical headphone amp.

There may be some eq settings in Roland"s Bluetooth remote app that could"ve helped but I doubt it. Anything played below C3 sounded like a booming hip hop bass line.
