  1. The OP mentioned gig bag or light weight case. The SS's are definitely gig bags and not cases, although they are very well made gig bags.

I have stacked my two keyboards on top of one another while in the gig bags with no problems, but YMMV.

I got the double padding, duffle style handles and leather strips on the bottom on mine. Zero regrets. They even made it an extra 1.5 inches deep for me because I keep a MIDI Thru box and the PS velcroed to the back of my SKX.

Another fan, and I did the same as above. I've done two with them, for my Nord Electro 5D and Kurzweil Artis 7. I'll also be ordering one for my Wurli shortly.

Check out their case for the Vintage Vibe Piano, similar to the Wurli bag I'll be ordering....slick!

  3. CD sales were actually up 5.2% over last year for the first 20 weeks of this year. So far 13.3 million CD's sold.

Much of the CD and LP sales is from K-Pop artists. Like a lot of vinyl sales, I assume a fair bit of the CD sales were from fans who don't even have a CD player, nor will they be listened to.

Most artists have figured out that that they want to draw people to their own websites for CD, vinyl and merchandise sales. CD's are still viable for a lot of independent artists.

I sold Lowreys from '82 to' 85. The Cotillion cost a mind-numbing $14k.  The-top-of-the-line MX-1 cost $25k. I have no clue what the Stardust cost but it certainly wasn't $4-5k. I guarantee it was an obscene amount of money.

When the Cotillion arrived at our store I gravitated to it for some reason and ended up performing on it at sales events. It wasn't terrible. Now, the bad boy of the bunch was the older D-325 that had a real Leslie and a snare with a thwock that you felt in your chest.

I saw mention online that it was in the $50k range...

So, from my googling I can't pin down an exact manufacture year but appears to be 2003-2005. Back then it seemed to have cost circa US 4K-5k? Have seen them sell for 10K second hand, the one in that vid is on sale for AU 5K which I think is a steal...

I'd bet it was a hell of a lot more than that here in the US? But I'll ask around....I'm thinking more like $15K...?

wowow that's cool John! It was a crazy wild time.  I would do it again, but a bit differently (wouldn't we all 😂

I played in that circuit as well as that time, and it still does exist as far as I know.

Back in the heyday of the late 1960's and early 70's, you knew if you went to the Roxy or the Troubadour or any number of clubs in and around Sunset you'd be seeing the best bands in the area. The people booking the clubs wanted the best and that's what brought people in. There was healthy competition between clubs to get good talent, and the bookers worked hard to get good acts. No one was coming to see one act and then leaving when they were done. ALL the bands were good, and worth staying for.

When they started the pay-to-play BS, they essentially cut their own throats. No one goes out to those clubs anymore, and when they do, they're there for a drink and a 40 minute set and then adios. A total shame....

  7. They, like musical instruments in general, skyrocketed in price during Covid, and have not come down.

Looking at the Reverb price guide it looks like prices have come down in the last few months, but you'll still be spending around $3700 to get one. I paid $2500 for one last summer I got off of Facebook Marketplace and I was pretty stoked. There are a lot of upgraded and/or refurbished ones that are in the $5K area, which is too rich for my blood.

  8. Something in the amplifier section I would imagine? I had a suitcase Rhodes that exhibited the same thing and the amps in the speaker cabinet needed to be fixed. Best to find an amp repair person or see if there is a Leslie service shop near you? I think you can find the repair manual online if there is an amp repair person near you that isn't familiar with them. Shouldn't be hard for them to run down.....

  9. I've never played the 990 (I didn't know it even existed), but I did have a the KC-500 in the 90's. Historically Roland keyboard amps are pretty awful to most here, me included.  I could never get a good sound out of mine with a variety of different keyboards tried.

As U.Honey mentioned, the weight of the 990 is brutal. I can't imagine it would sound good enough to warrant that purchase when the MS amps are almost half the weight.

I do have the KP-610, and I am very pleased with the sound and features. To me it competes with PPA speakers, and for me in a 2 guitar band, it's plenty loud and clean. I'm a big fan, although unlike the Roland you'll likely not find it in a store to try out before you buy.

  10. For those that have a lot of equity in a home but are not necessarily well positioned for retirement, a reverse mortgage might be a good option to consider.  There is a lot of anecdotal misinformation out there, but it's worth investigating.

My mother-in-law and her husband were not well positioned whatsoever for retirement; neither had well paying jobs through their careers, so their SS checks were pretty low. They had, however, purchased a home about 10 years ago that had appreciated considerably.

After my father-in-laws passing, my MIL would not have been able to keep the house based only on her now deceased husbands SS income. I had brought up the possibility of a reverse mortgage with my wife's siblings, but they rejected it out of hand based on the above mentioned anecdotal misinformation. Thankfully after a bit of time they listened, and it has been the best thing for all involved. My MIL has been able to stay in the house with no house payments now, and no needed contributions from the children to keep her there.

Sad to see her go...  RIP Tina.

Even sadder will be to see a movie about her, a few years from now, which will share details of her personal life we may not know... (Or want to know ever...) This isn't a knock against her, it's just after seeing "Cash" (Johnny Cash), "Rocket Man" (Elton John), "Bohemian Rhapsody" (Freddie Mercury), "Respect" (Aretha Franklin) and "Elvis" (well, duh!); it's disheartening to see all the personal struggles they all went through glamorized on the big screen.  It makes my old UMass band mates say to me on more than one occasion, "Gee, aren't you glad we didn't make it big?!"

There already was a biopic (What's Love Got To Do With It) back in '93. And there was a very good documentary on her on HBO two years ago:

  12. Wow, I'd love to see that as well. I don't remember it at the time, but I always like the band.

Judging from this clip, sounds like the late Paul Raymond used some string synth, maybe a Mini Moog, Wurlie, some sort of electric piano ie Helpinstill, Kawai or Yamaha electric grand?
