  1. Hey Myles,

There's a Marshal JTM60 1x12 for insanely cheap money locally, but I'm reading scary reviews. I read that it has the identical circuit as the JCM600. Are these amps miss-steps for Marshall, or did I read particularly scathing reviews? The reviewers universally loved the sound, but loathed the reliability issues. Apparently, overheating is a huge concern with these, and a cooling fan is advised by several people.

  2. Hey Myles,

My buddy Dave(CL10 here) is having surprise shutdowns to Zero volume with his Classic 30, which recovers after a cool down. It usually cuts out in 1.5 to 2 hours playing nearly dimed. There is no standby switch, and he's wondering if it's possibly as simple as a resistor replacement. I've always heard good reliability reports with these. I know I'm not furnishing much info here, but do these units have known issues like this?

  3. Hey Myles,

The rectifier tube in my old 6V6 Lifco Cobra Mark 2 has something rattling around inside it, so I wanna replace it. There are no legible numbers left on it, and it could very well be the original tube from the 60's/70's. One reviewer thinks it has the AB763A circuit, like an old Princeton(?). Another says his has 7025's. Mine has 12AT7's. Is a 5U4GB gonna be the right recto tube?

My local store has a 5AR4, but doesn't know if it's an appropriate substitute.

  4. Hey Myles,

I thought my Lifco amp issue was resolved, and it sounds OK unless it's really cranked, but it still isn't very loud, as I found out in a full band scenario. Are there higher output version of 6V6's, or other tubes that will raise the output on a fixed bias amp like that, and keep the sound quality about the same?

  5. Hey Myles, A couple months back I asked about a Lifco head I've got, and you told me to make sure I had a 12AT7 in one of the preamp sockets. You were so right! It cleaned up beautifully - not in the Deluxe Reverb sense of clean, but the grit and hash it had with 12AX7's is gone! Thanks again! Now my small amp debacle is solved!
  6. Tim (Caprae) suggested I post some observations I made about starter guitars. In condensed form:

Check for fret roughness on any guitar you are considering! Take a knowledgeable friend along if you can.

Try to avoid really inexpensive models - they're cheap for a reason, and pretty much anything under $200.00 new is a project item for a skilled person, but nothing but trouble for a novice. Of course there are exceptions, but a novice usually won't spot them. Pay a bit more, and get a well made, well finished guitar. You'll go a lot further with it.

Anything made in the newly industrialized countries in the Far East is still a crap shoot - quality control is still very iffy. They'll get better in time, but for now, I suggest letting someone else serve as the developmental Guinea pig, unless your in-the-know bud spots a diamond in the rough for you.

  7. Hey Myles,

I bought a Lifco Cobra Mark2 amp, and from what I can gather, it uses the AB763A circuit, with 6V6's and 12AT7's. I just swapped those out for 6L6's and 12AX7's that seem to wake it up some, but it's strictly gainy sounding. I found a post on HC where a guy says he's modded these from Class A to AB, and can get 22 watts from it, and tone like a Deluxe Reverb. I'd like to get some clarity out of this unit, cuz right now it's stictly distorted and underpowered. I't's almost definitely from the 60's, with a tube rectifier, and all point to point. Any ideas or schematics?

If it is an AB763 circuit just assure V6 is a 12AT7. The amps actually put out close to 30 watts if they have 425 or so plate volts.

Prints or links to prints are on my website.

    Wow! Thx, bud! :thu::wave:

  9. All I know is I saw a recent headline about something along the lines of "tattoo remorse fuels tattoo removal business boom".

Personally I think that for some of us who are hoping to still be around for awhile, it's a questionable thing to do on any prominent part of the bod.

I don't have any and am not considering any.

Then again, maybe I should get Bluesape and Ellwood's opinions.....should I go ahead and get a really large flying V tattoo on each forearm?

A Flying V alter becoming the central fixture in your home would be sufficiently respectful! :D:wave:

  10. Thanks Myles,

It does have a sweet voice until cranked, then it has this awesome growl! The trem has a wide range of adjustability. Great little amp!

Just a quick side note when I was looking back at this ....

When you said circa 1954 I thought you were talking tweed deluxe. If this is brown tolex and has trem maybe we are talking Princeton or another amp. In any case .... Fender Brown Tolex amps are from the early sixties and would be a different value than what I guessed at when I thought it was a tweed deluxe.

If it is a Brown Deluxe or Priceton it is still a very wonderful amp in every way.

Yeah, thanks on that, too. Doc told me it's from the early '60's, but the elderly gent who owns it seems sure he bought it used in '60. And yeah, it's a Brown Deluxe.

Spectacular amp and the tone stack has been copied in some of the most repsected ultra high end amps made today.

    Happy playing.

    Thanks, Myles

    This is great news!
