  9. Myles, this isn't exactly an anmp question, but I thought you might know the answer. I bought an el cheap-o P Bass copy to soup up with a 10 or 12K Kent Armstrong P Bass pickup I had laying around the house. I plan to change out the cheesy pots it came with, which are 500Ks. My question is, should I get more 500K pots to replace them, or will a different value work better with the hot pickup?
  10. Myles, I just scored an Electro Harmonix English Muffin pedal. Can you make a suggestion on a 12AX7 that will make the sound a little lower gain and sweeter in the highs? Mike

    OT: TATTOOS

When I was about 5, there was a cop show on TV called "Highway Patrol", starring Broderick Crawford. I remember hearing him on the cop radio, snarling "2150 by" and getting a description over the radio of dangerous criminals he had to catch, and they almost always had a tattoo, or it seemed like they always did. I thought then, "boy, I'd better never get a tattoo!" I guess it was just in case I decided to be a vicious criminal when I grew up; a young guy's got to keep his options open, doncha know? Anyway, I never got one, and I can't say I felt like I missed much till my brother told me about his. I always think about this girl I knew who had a tattoo of a long-stemmed rose standing up right above her left breast. That was 30 years ago. By now, I'd bet it has a much longer stem...
  12. I don't usually care for "reality TV", but I have spent the evening watching "LA Ink". It's a show about these tatttoo artists in LA, and the stuff they go through. They had Scott Ian from Anthrax, and Frank something-or-other from My Chemical Romance getting large and rather elaborate tats from these ladies, who are all really good at what they do. Watching all that made me wonder how many of us here have tats, and how many? Is anyopne like really into tats? I don't have any tats, but my older brother got one last year, and it kinda has me thinking about it; maybe a Flying V with a cross on it or something, high up up on my arm. But wow, tats ain't cheap! I can't see spending a lot of money on something like that, but from what I've read, getting a cheapo tattoo is very much like getting a cut-rate appendectomy; in short, not a good idea... So, what do youse guys know about tats?
  13. Hey Myles, I have a non-tube related question, but maybe it's some thing you can answer for me. I recently got a Variax to go with my POD XT Live, and the combination is sounding pretty good to me, given a few tweaks and changes here and there. I am curious if you can recommend a good way to amplify it, one that would get good acoustic guitar sounds as well as the electric sounds, which sound pretty good through a combo amp. Is there one amp out there that will deliver both?
  14. Myles, I just got an SWR SM 500 bass amp, which has one 12AX7 in the preamp. A guy at the Guitar Center I bought it used from told me to replace the stock tube with a GT Gold Series GT ECC83. Do you agree with that, and why?
  15. 12AX7 gain 100 12AT7 gain 70 (but is an awful tone generator) 5751 gain 70 12AY7 gain 40 (the first gain stage of a tweed bassman and some other greats 12AU7 gain of about 16 and generally used as a phase inverter. Is a 12AU7 a good low-gain tone generator?
  16. Cool enough. Thanx. I'll check the GT site for 'em. Thanx much.
  17. Hey Myles, I just got a Valve Junior head, and I want to upgrade the EL-84. What I am looking for is something a little slower to break up and has a brighter tone than the tube it came with. Got a recommendation, and if so, how much would it cost?
  18. So what's he doing, the equivalent of a soundman touching a knob on the board and smiling when he gets a request from a jerky musican for "more sparkle" in the mains mix? Is this a placebo? I do not understand if you are asking me a direct question Sorry, I was asking if the guy was saying the Sovtek would last longer in that position than an EH as a way of giving me the same sort of cure as a doctor who gives a hypochondriac patient a sugar pill? A placebo is a fake medicine, a "sugar pill" that is sometimes given to a patient in hopes that it will psych them into feelng better because the think they are getting real medicine.

  20. Thanks for the feedback. Good luck and hope it all gets resolved fast. [/QB] I heard from Joe Naylor, and he said: Mike, It's all working good, will ship back tomorrow. Note the following: 1) Second stage (2nd from right, if facing back of amp) EH 12AX7 was bad. I replaced it with a Sovtek 12AX7WC. I recommend sticking with a Sovtek in that particular position. The 2nd stage is hard on EH for some reason. 2) The speaker mounting screws were very loose, causing distortion. I tightened it up, and it got louder and cleaner. 3) I moved your 12AT7 from the reverb stage to the 1st stage. This made the gain cleaner. The 1st stage is the most sensitive stage to different tube types/brands. 4) I put a EH 12AX7 in the reverb stage. This brought the reverb level back up to stock. The amp is on it's way back, apparently with all problems solved. Any ideas on why a Sovtek 12AX7 would last longer in the second stage of that amp than an EH 12AX7s?
