I just took delivery today of a 50 watt head from RC Davis Amplifiers. It's a great, well-built, relatively light unit. The tone's are a bit black-face bassman head, with some overall improvements. You can check them out at www.rcdavisamps.com .
The front panel on all RC Davis amps is, from left to right, input, bass, middle, treble, volume, jewel.
I tried one of my Strats and one of my Les Pauls. I almost like the Strat better through this amp. That's pretty amazing because, right now, I tend to favor my LP through most amps.
The mid-range control is pretty amazing, virtually a gain control. With the mid cranked, the amp is lively at almost any volume. With the volume and the mid cranked, there was complete saturation.
The reverb control knob is on the back of the amp. It comes with a footswitch which also has a reverb control knob on it. Very cool! At low volume, you can crank the reverb for super-surf sounds. The amp reduces the reverb as you crank the volume.
I'm really enjoying the chimey, yet full, complex distortion you get when you turn the amp up. It's relatively clean at low volumes. Or you can crank the volume, and get clean sounds by lowering the volume on your axe.
Check 'em out! RC Davis offers its 30 watt and 50 watt amps as heads, 1x12 combo, and a few other combo options.
I'm a believer!
