  1. I remember reading a while back (probably via Keyboard Magazine) that Billy Preston played an ARP synth on ‘Space Race’. That got me thinking, there’s another song called ‘Struttin’ on ‘Billy Preston - The Best’ (CD that I think is out of print) that has him playing an ARP. His lead synth has a cool tone that sounds to me like a large amount of lfo, assigned to filter with a pretty high rate, …and also either the same lfo simultaneously assigned to pitch or, (alternate theory) maybe another lfo assigned to pitch at a little lower rate. Any ARP players out there who know if I’m correct in remembering there was a button called ‘Wow’ on some of the old ARP’s that did these kind of routings for you when engaged? I think I played around on my Moog Little Phatty once before trying to do something similar, but didn’t nail the tone. Maybe I’d need some additional c.v. (an extra lfo) brought into the instrument, since IIRC (the Little Phatty is in its soft case right now) the L.P. is designed stock, with simple mod. routing; I don’t remember the modulation section allowing routing of its one lfo to two destinations, namely filter & pitch in this case, at the same time. I am not looking at the synth now though, so I apologize if I might have forgotten if it actually is simple to program the sound on the L.P. Thanks.
  2. ‘You Can’t Do It Right’ by Deep Purple off the ‘Stormbringer’ album has some nice Clavinet playing. I think he doubles the recurring (Blackmore) guitar riff but he also plays some other grooving things that augment the bass line. I think it’s panned hard right, IIRC (I usually listen in the car).
  3. I watched part 1 last night. As a long time fan, my take on it is that it delivers in every way. Very enjoyable. It"s the Beatles, so mostly not tedious. Paul playing around with a nascent 'Long and Winding Road" (I listened to/for his arpeggiated chords like that Abmaj9) while getting input on a lyric part from Mal Evans was cool. I liked that the (unabridged footage of the) row" between GH & PM had context (including time crunches), and wasn"t uglier than it could have been. 'I Me Mine" was great from the first draft!
  4. 30 minutes is my max each way. I don"t plan to ever make an exception. I find I need to simplify my life at this stage, not complicate it with extra commute time or potential drama. And yes, I seek keyboard-centric situations lately, as opposed to guitar-dominated. No apologies on my part for appreciating the special nature of keyboards in Classic Rock, Blues, Gospel, and Jazz (genres I play, and that care about).
  5. Disclaimer: Before posting I read the posting etiquette guidelines, and I utilized the Search function, but I couldn"t find a related thread already started on this. Anyone else like this track generally, and particularly what DeYoung played on the synth (I"m referring to the arpeggiated chords) during some parts of the verses (to clarify what I"m talking about, it starts at about 1:01 into the track)? It always caught my ear when listening. Thoughts? -John
  6. I've been listening (as of this morning, in the car) to 'The Art Of McCartney' album. I listened to all of CD 1, and most of CD 2. As a long-time Paul fan I was impressed with almost every song. There were only one or two (covers) that I didn't care for. Lots of 'heavy hitters' on this album. I thought the producer did a good job of pairing the right artist or band with the right song/s. Some tasty keys parts too, including Harry Connick Jr. taking a Jazzy piano solo on 'My Love'--that is for sure a stand out track. I liked the Dr. John one ('Let 'Em In') too.
  7. I cringe when I see other keyboard players setting drinks on any of their gear (e.g. amps, or module racks), let alone a vintage Leslie or B3. RGV (Rudy VanGelder) would not approve.
