  1. Well, I guess I'm keeping my NI Kontrol S61 MK3 for a while. AstroLab has no polyAT and I assume not a Fatar keybed, and has only a tiny, fidgety display/control.

The NI S61 MK3 has a beautifully large color display, eight touch-sensitive knobs, plus it has a powerful built-in processor that NI plans to use to expand its capabilities with future updates, and is already MIDI 2.0 capable.  The other thing I don't like about the AstroLab is it's even bulkier and heavier than the already large NI S61 MK3. List price is $1,999, I see it on B&H for $1,599. Too much money for what it is.

That's where I'd put my money. "A new chapter" tends to translate into some drivel corporate-speak about "exciting" "innovative" "channels" "building on our heritage and legacy" "bright future" "mission and values", and the folks who actually come up with the clever ideas being laid off.

Maybe by inMusic like Moog was?

Notice the use of the phrase "A New Chapter" in the headline:

  3. Got an email from Arturia that says:

    “A new chapter awaits…

We are grateful to continue making the instruments we love, but it is the ingenuity and passion of you, our fellow sound explorers, that drives us forward. Thank you for being with us every step of the way.

Join us on Tuesday April 9th at 6PM CEST as we set the stage for what's coming next…“

There’s much speculation in the live chat as to what they refer to. People are thinking everything from a subscription model, or they’ve been acquired (boo!!), to some new instrument or controller (yay!!).

  4. You don’t need to do anything to your Mac. There is no BIOS on a Mac anyway.

Do you have the NI Hardware Connection Service app installed?

If you do (I’m guessing you don’t, from your description),then open either Kontakt or Komplete Kontrol plugins in a MainStage or Logic Pro channel strip (or your choice of other DAW).

If either of these NI plugins are active in the channel strip, select an instrument from either of those plugins.

That instrument should automatically load into the Kontrol S49 MK3 and show its artwork and controls on the keyboard screen.

It could also be that since you have a demo unit, it might be possible that the unit was already previously registered to someone (at Sweetwater). Or maybe they never actually registered the unit, and you need to do that.

    Here’s the setup procedure:

    https://www.native-instruments.com/en/specials/komplete/kontrol-setup/

Did you input the unit’s serial number, and update the unit’s firmware as mentioned in the link above?

Sculpture is utterly uninviting as a physical modeler, so that could go as well.

I'm a physical modeling enthusiast and out of the many physical modeling synths I have, Sculpture is still my favorite. It's more experimental instead of emulative which is why I like it.

The Synclavier is very cool and was revolutionary but you won't find one on nearly as many successful recordings, or at live music events.

Probably because the Synclavier cost $15k on the low end (typically much more) compared to a Fender guitar that sold for maybe $500 back in the day.

  7. Thanks, but I’ll pass. I already have Arturia’s Synclavier V that was developed by Cameron Jones who designed the original that uses the original code.  Plus it has 12 partials, compared to the hardware’s 4 partials, and each partial has two operators both with additive and sample capability. The hardware only has a sine operator and an additive operator per partial. I can also run the software version on my 16” M1 MacBook Pro compared to the original that needs a proprietary mini computer with noisy cooling fans. But maybe the pedigree is important enough to someone to pay $62k.

It took 3 units total from Sweetwater for me to get one with non-jumpy velocity response from black keys and with all the keytops level with one another.

Fatar's poor QC rears it's ugly head again. But once you get a good one, both the action and software integration is great!

I decided to take delivery from FedEx of my Kontrol S61 MK3 today (instead of sending it back for something else) and everything seems to be good so far. The action is very nice, excellent feel, no velocity response problems at all. Software integration is pretty amazing, loads all my Arturia and NI instruments seamlessly. Guess I got lucky. 😌

This seems to be the only thread about the Rise 2. I get lots of ads about it on social media and it’s currently on sale so I’m tempted. Most of the reviews are positive, but I’d like to know if any of my fellow forumites have any further thoughts.

@Ed A. did you get yours and what do you think?

    Anyone else?

I did get the Seaboard Rise 2 a couple months ago. It’s a really nicely built instrument, looks and performs very good, but I ended up sending it back. I’ve tried a variety of MPE controllers and I’ve concluded they aren’t for me. I’m more comfortable with a regular keyboard.

Thanks for the info. I’ll see about canceling the order and wait to see what Arturia does with a KeyLab MKIII, or reconsider the Korg Keystage 61.

  11. Country music, more specifically, contemporary country music. I can appreciate Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, but I can’t stand pretty much all modern country music.

An old story about drummer Buddy Rich:

Jazz and big band drummer Buddy Rich died after surgery in 1987. As he was being prepped for surgery, a nurse asked him, “Is there anything you can't take?” Rich replied, “Yeah, country music.”
