Best Micro Processor?

Recommended Posts

Hi Craig: I've been considering updating my PC for music work. I'm curious as to which processor you would recommend. I currently have a Pentium II 350 with 128 megs of ram running WinXP Home. I'm looking for the best processor for digital audio & midi work. I don't mind springing for a P4 if thats the best choice, but if I could get into something cheaper that's equally effective then that would obviously be the prefered choice. Your thoughts on this as well as how much ram I should have would be appreciated. Regards, Eddie

The new Athlon XP is probably the best performer, certainly for the money. I'd get one of those, with a DDR-capable motherboard, and get at least 512mb of RAM. Make sure that you get a quality case and an Athlon-approved power supply.

If your demands aren't that big you might want to look into the latest 1.2gHz Celeron processor. Asus makes a nice motherboard for it and the PIII Tualatin CPU's. The Celeron has pretty good performance and the price is great, about $100. AMD also has a Duron chip in this price range but I haven't had a chance to check out the AMD stuff yet.

The most powerfull processor for Daw at the moment is the Amd Palomino(XP)hands down no contest. That might change in a few months though with whatever motorola counters with.At this point Intel has put themselves out of the game which is a shame because the PC needs competition to keep prices low.Get an Asus board with either an AMD 761(most stable) chipset or the newest Via(fastest).
