  1. My humble two cents: In the last couple of years, age, back and job requirements made me reduce the size of my rig for most gigs, and nowadays I'm mostly gigging small-to-medium venues with a GK MB200 small head and a Fender Rumble (2x8" neo speakers +tweeter) bass cab. At first I was quite afraid it might not be loud enough, but I've found it fills space more than adequately in most of the situations I have used it. For slightly bigger spaces I can always add a second 8ohm cab (I use either a 12" or a 2x10", but it's heavier since those are not Neo, and occupies more space), but the head can be carried inside the gig bag's pocket and the cab weighs next to nothing, and it's absolutely worth it
  2. Another sad loss... And also noteworthy, their tech Elwood Francis, who has been working with them for years, is Dusty's replacement on bass duties, as Dusty himself wanted. I remember seeing him on a Rig Rundown video, explaining ZZ Top's bass and guitar setup with such detail and RESPECT for the guys and their work (Elwood himself coming from a somewhat different musical background, which to me makes extra points), and was delighted, now reading that he is filling for Dusty makes me feel a little bit better, is a well deserved position, honoring Dusty and keeping ZZ Top's flame alive...
  3. Well, Hello Again everybody!! Guess what... I was listening to some old tunes and tried to remember something about the name of certain obscure bass player whose name is not on the top 30 list anywhere else, and I remembered that years ago there was a discussion in the old LowDown where he was mentioned, and googled... and found the LowDown again after so many years of thinking it was gone!! Glad to know it's back around, and with some familiar names too!. Greetings and best wishes to everyone!!!!!
  4. I feel happy. Opened for ASIA a couple nights ago. Was a nice experience, despite the usual turmoil related to big shows. Was big on costumes and all -although The Shirt has long passed around here- , the sound was nice -it is always nice to have friendly, well known-from-the-road buddies in charge of both Main and Monitors-, and the audience was nice. The Asia guys were not so much, but hey, "they're stars". Whatever. Here a couple pics. http://alembic.com/club/messages/411/105564.jpg http://alembic.com/club/messages/411/105563.jpg
  5. Well, I DO (proudly!) own an Alembic. an Epic 5. No LED's though. To add to it, it has no fretboard inlays whatsoever, and the side dots are small brass ones. Eventually, they tend to get darkened, and in some situations are VERY hard to see. In the end you have to get accustomed to not using them, or you would spend much precious time watching your fingerboard, instead. OTOH, when I bought my fretless (an Alvarez), I was not totally pleased with its -passive- original electronics. Also, I disliked the sound of flatwounds on it (maybe because of the electronics). So I installed old, worn-out thin roundwounds, and loved them!. There are Epoxy coatings that can help you with the fretboard wear if you decide to keep the rounds, but be aware than switching to flats will also change the sound, in various degrees depending on the gauge and maker. I finally installed a pair of EMGs (40-J) on it, and got the sound I was after ON THAT BASS. I still want a fretless (or defretted, can also do for me) old, beaten Jazz Bass...
  6. There's an excellent drummer who is also a friend of mine, who uses to reply to the "How do you do" question with (translated) "Well, I'm fine... but nevermind.."
  7. Slap the patchouli out of 'em and cut off their ponytails. Which is what Paul K did to himself some time ago, I am afraid. Or maybe that was it?
  8. Exactly what happened to me, Funkslap Mama. The company I'd been working on for the last 12 years, merged with another, and all the IT Tech personnel of both was working together in the same space, yet each one on its company's duties. On January this year, we were told that, from then on, all the personnel should do the duties of BOTH companies, and without any extra income for the double labour. SO... since I had been working in two different jobs by the time, plus making some with music as well, and the pay was not really good, I decided for once and for all to say goodbye after 12 years. I had an interview with the managers and made pretty clear to them my point of view (they also made quite clear they had no intention of raising the wages for anyone), so it seemed like the obvious decision to make. It turned out I am WAY better now, with the other job I already had (I do daily news translation work at home, which only takes me one hour of my daily schedule), got a raise on that job that was equivalent to what I was earning on the 8-hours a day IT job, and have more free time to make a life in music, but with a financial cushion paid by the translations, just in case. So, in the end... Sometimes what you think that might be worst, may end being up a blessing.
  9. Maybe not too much OT. Last nite I played on a HUGE show, the Xmas party of what is probably the biggest FM network on the country. I had the chance to share the stage with some well-known names of our national music industry (such as the legendary pop-rock band "Aditus", now powered with old friends of mine in a Brass section, such as Rodolfo Reyes (Sax) and José Ramoncini (Trumpet), and "Pocho" Serra on guitar, also played "Los Amigos Invisibles" (Venezuelan-gone-international band, currently signed to Luaka Bop records) , of which two of them were students of mine back in ... I won't tell , and also a Reggaetón duo (dunno-who and dunno-who-else, I just can't remember) with whom was playing an old friend of mine and former band colleague -his other band, his own project, is a Dream-Theater-like prog-rock band, mind you!- ). Right after us jumped onstage (with his orchestra) a man who is known around here as a "Legend" of the EUB.. most exactly, the Ampeg Baby Bass, one of the most famous Venezuelans in the world, and a prominent Salsa musician: OSCAR DE LEON. Does anybody around know him? He's a sweet guy, polite and an absolute delight to share backstage with. And a titan on stage, period. It was a honor to share stage and backstage time with him. Here a video I found on YouTube, of a song he wrote dedicated to his Bass.. "Mi Bajo y yo" (My bass and me), which states that "My bass and me are just like brothers... ". Wouldn't any of us say such a thing about our instruments? Here it is. [video:youtube]
  10. Talking about taint punches... haven't read Tater Nuts in a while... hope is everything ok. Same as Mr. Kramer Ferrington.. long time no read... I guess there are phases...
  11. Happy, Joyful and belated birthday, M00t!! May The Thump be with you!
  12. One of my Jazz Basses has what they call a "pearloid pickguard". http://www.radiogato.com/store/pics/slammervert.jpg Pic does not makes much justice to the pickguard, but there it is. But... why not go for the "real" thing? Just saw THIS on EvilBay: http://i.ebayimg.com/16/!BSw-nC!!2k~$(KGrHgoH-CsEjlLltsWbBKE0bb!fzw~~_1.JPG
