current favorite band?

Recommended Posts

Hey I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I wanted to start a thread for discussing your favorite band (who, why, what they sound like, where you can see them, etc)

Mine has got to be The Living End. These guys kill it on stage. I lived in Oz for a year a couple years ago and when I saw them I remember thinking North Americas got nothing on these boys. Best show I've ever seen, really hard and crazy, a real night to remember, not like some bands who just stand there playing through their set while the audience brings all the love. I can't stand when you pay for a show, are completely psyched to go and then the band acts like their on downers. Total turn off on all fronts.

Cant wait to see TLE again next sunday (27th) at mod club. It's been too long.

I love me some RUSH! those guys are the most amazing band out there. nobody else does it like them. Led Zeppelin of course holds a high spot on the list. Dream Theater, Coheed and Cambria, and most big name Prog-Metal bands really break new territory as well. Great Stuff. Gotta Love It

It's funny, because at work all I ever listen to is Floyd, Zeppelin, Hendrix, the Stones, Santana, and the Allman Brothers, I have a little box that holds maybe 15 CDs and I rotate a couple of them out from time to time but it tends toward classic rock (I used to listen to stuff like the Butthole Surfers and all I ever heard from the guys I work with was a bunch of whining). I like me some Tool too. I heard some Ray Charles at a party just the other night...that guy was incredible! Apparently, I really like "old" sounding recordings. I don't know if I am the only one that notices this stuff but the newer recordings can really grate on one's nerves with all the compressor abuse that happens these days.

You're not the only one.

I employ a "de-compressor" (a comp/gate set at some extreme settings) in my home rig. It's not perfect, but it makes the stuff a lot more listenable.

I understand where you are coming from...I actually STILL use compressors...however, I try to do either mild compression or what is known as "gain staging" where you tend to compress at lower ratios (and slightly different ones for each track....maybe print the track and compress it again even) and you have a really mellow buildup. I am not real down with what alot of producers do and "slam" the compressors hard and fast....never mind what they do at the mastering stage...I laugh when I think about this old "mixerman" blog at harmony central where he decries the thousands of dollars spent on high quality mastering and the bloody kick actually distorts (in the digital clipping kind of way...not the nice analog way).
