'Deep Purple's mega hit 'Smoke on the Water" had its origins 50 years ago this week * at a casino in Montreux, Switzerland, where someone set off a flare gun during a performance by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. The resulting fire burned the building to the ground and the rest, as they say, is history.' * origins - not the recording or release dates Still, it's one of my top 10 favorite rock tunes! I love Don Airey, but I do wish Jon was still rockin'... Because of the incident and the exposure Montreux received when "Smoke on the Water" became an international hit, Deep Purple formed a lasting bond with the town. The song is honoured in Montreux by a sculpture along the lake shore (right next to the statue of Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury) with the band's name, the song title, and the riff in musical notes. The new casino in Montreux also displays notes from the riff as decoration on its balustrade facing the gambling hall. I enjoyed it. There was a big trend several years ago of jazz covers of 80s pop tunes. Some better than others, but I found them entertaining and an interesting take. I remember folks in the US being amused by these covers (I work in an US multinational company so we often have visitors), it was playing in the background in a restaurant, so it seems it was more a local thing as they had not heard it. Now from something off-the-wall, there's a brazilian band that does Samba version of rock tunes (among some rock/samba crossover original material) - which i personally don't dig. The chord progression under the main riff reminded of Edgar Winter's "All Out" from the Jasmine Nightdreams album. Here is a translation from a French language newspaper article. 'Here is the release concerning the Montreux Casino fire. As previously already stated in the press, a fire completely ravaged the Montreux Casino on Saturday, 4 December, 1971, at the end of the afternoon where a pop concert had attracted some 2000 listeners. By exceptional luck, this accident did not claim a victim. On the other hand, the damage in numbers was between 12 and 15 million francs. The investigation performed by the police can identify the perpetrator of the act that caused this catastrophe. It was one Spicka Zdenek, born 4 November 1949, Czech refugee, previously of Epalinages, currently on the run (see photo). He was placed under arrest by the [local judge] in Vevey. The matter is that Spicka fired a flare gun in the [concert] hall, first some [capsules] and then a small flare that lodged into the ceiling which set it on fire. We were all young pups, and the tendency (actually more like a compulsion) was to rush it - and then it would lose all it's impact. LOL A friend of mine was doing a sax/flute overdub session for this album and asked if I'd like to hang out. Anytime I could hang at I studio back then I would. So session was going good nice small studio. Then Pat Boone showed up towards the end of the session. I was a young assh0l3 and thinking I'm a Fusion player I'm hip and Pat's so square. But Pat came out of the control room to the studio to say hello and chat. Pat was such a nice guy enjoying making these big band versions of Metal tunes it was hard not to like the guy. Its a great song, period, but I have a special affection for people who did solo or duo acts in the 70s and early 80s. It took Jupiter-sized balls to tackle the unpredictable budding technology and I mean the planet. Nash is close to what I hope to see from someone who really rocks the F out of an alternate controller. Its never happened with the Eigenharp (so far), but the Osmose has me hoping. I don't know how much one could or SHOULD really lay into an Osmose physically, but the demos so far have been encouraging. I want someone to SCARE me. As Bill Hicks said "PLAY FROM YOUR F**KING HEART!!" Guitars player young and old who still don't know how to tune a guitar, but they know the shapes to play Smoke On the Water. Guess that why so many people laugh when they hear that riff. I remember Pat Boone in the leather vest displaying his guns on some shows. He could laugh at himself. Having a very clean cut and religious image it was somewhat bold what he did at that time. He got some mileage out of it as a springboard for religious talk. I wonder how he would have turned out without Richard Boone as an older brother. There is a Western where he played a tough guy.
