The http to https thing

Recommended Posts

Hi, guys -

I think we need to switch MPN over to https. Jim says it"ll solve a bunch of issues that we have, so we"re gonna do it very soon.

One of the downsides appears to be that doing this will break all of the links to 20+ years worth of the videos. While that"s highly undesirable, it"s a smaller problem than the other issues not being https is causing. Yes, daily lockups - I"m looking at you.

I can"t help but believe that we"re not the first web site/community to experience this problem, so I figure there must be some kind of solution in place that others have used. Of course, each link can be fixed manuallyâ¦but that"s not exactly ideal.

I know - you"d figure we could just ask our hosting folks directlyâ¦but that apparently is not an easy proposition. I"m going to try posting in the UBB help forums to see if a solution can be found there.

I figured it might not hurt to ask if any of our community has any experience in such matters? :idk:

Normally when a site is converted from HTTP to HTTPS it"s set up so that if anyone uses an old HTTP URL, the server automatically redirects the browser to the corresponding HTTPS URL, so old links still work.

Not sure how others feel, But I'd be happy to contribute to the cost of perhaps some external online storage facility - Icedrive, Google Drive, Onedrive, Dropbox - whatever....so that all those old data links and data could be preserved with a ,ink for members of KF only.

Not sure how you'd get the data off tbh honest, sorry...but yeah happy to contribute and on a monthly basis too if necessary. For all the members here it wouldn't be much, would it????

Anyhoo, just putting it out there

There is no luck - luck is simply the confluence of circumstance and co-incidence...

I wouldn't worry about broken video links, as those tend to have a limited lifetime anyway.

Yep this :thu:

I know in Wordpress-land there's third party plugins that allow you to bulk update URLs / links, hopefully UBB has something to offer...

UBB is in PHP and unless things have been changed since I retired the code is all in text files so a someone should be able to write a script to find and update the links in the PHP code.

Thanks for the responses, guys! I went to the the UBB Central community forums and found that there's a solution there. :w00t:

Kind of ironic that it didn't occur to me to look there sooner...who knew consulting a topic-specific forum could help...:facepalm::hider:

Okay, we'll get this done. Hopefully it'll stop these DDOS attacks that have been slowing the forum up. :thu:

Hey, those of you who have experience with this stuff, we may be able to use another perspective/pair of hands to help here and there. Please drop me a PM if you're interested...

I dunno...but according to Jim, the DDOS attacks are one of the slow down culprits.

Turns out there's a content rebuilder in the control panel to update forum URL references from HTTP to HTTPS.:w00t:

Has anyone analyzed what percent of the http links are for specific web sites?

I believe youtube forced the conversion to https-only access many years ago, but our MPN forum is so old that it probably predates that.

How many of the old links on MPN to videos that are http links are for youtube? Could these all be changed safely to https?

There may be other video sites in the same category, for which a similar process might work.

I will be most grateful to have MPN go like other sites go!

It took a chunk of my life to get here and I am still not sure where "here" is.

Would it also solve our avatar problem? Because using the ones provided SUCKS! i want to change mine more often, but can"t because what i choose is too big, or not correct according to the server.

As the waitress at club says... it's all about the size.

Update:

Apparently the size of the database and all the maintenece we need to get done to make it work properly and checked thoroughly means a longer update period.

It's now scheduled for Monday. The forum will be down while it happens, so Jim will put an official announcement well in advance to give everyone a heads up.
