Jonathan Hughes
Wow! This is a fantastic interview. Pat Metheny is always a great interview subject â always thoughtful, modest, and extremely intelligent.
GovernorSilver
They touched on McCoy Tyner's playing on "Song for Bilbao" so I had to check it out. McCoy did his thing, when it was his turn, except on the bridge, where he chose to simply play the chords. [video:youtube] It was also nice to hear them talk about Lyle Mays a bit. GovernorSilver
Got to the part where Pat said he'd saved $5000 from gigging with Gary Burton. After leaving GB's band, he spent $3000 on a van for his new band, and $1500 on an Oberheim Four Voice. Lyle Mays in his own interview said that Pat bought the synth because he wanted Lyle to play synth. Dude must have had a lot of faith in his new band. Jonathan Hughes
"They touched on McCoy Tyner's playing on "Song for Bilbao" so I had to check it out." I did the same. The synth story is awesome. I had also heard that the fretless precision bass that Mark Egan played was actually Pat's.
Justin Havu
Had to look up "James" after watching this interview. Amazing. Mark Zeger
Rick Beato grew up a few miles from where I live. Until the video below, I didn"t know he"s very old friend of a dear friend, incredible musician, beloved local HS music teacher, and even better person Bill Tiberio. Ironically, before this or the Metheny interview, Bill & I made plans to see Metheny"s Side Eye project in November. We saw the Unity band together several years ago. So maybe I"m 2 degrees of separation from Pat Metheny?
stoken6
Had to look up "James" after watching this interview. Amazing. So much to like in that video you posted Justin. It sounds like more than a trio. The bass tone is immense. And the drummer is an object lesson in how to maintain a groove at pin-drop volume. Cheers, Mike. GovernorSilver
Both versions of "James" are great. Do check out the video with Lyle though if you haven't already - his solo takes you on a completely journey than what you may be used to from the Offramp album version
Mark Zeger
Here"s a newly released (sort of) part 2: a theory analysis of 'James'.
Motif88
Loved it but hope there will another episode. Missed dives into First Circle, As Falls Wichita, Still Life Talking and Parallel Realities with Jack DeJohnette. They are all masterpieces⦠Quote Using: Yamaha: Montage M8x| Spectrasonics: Omnisphere, Keyscape | uhe: Diva, Hive2, Zebra2| Roland: Cloud Pro | Arturia: V Collection | NI: Komplete 14 | VPS: Avenger | Cherry: GX80 | G-Force: OB-E | Korg: Triton, MS-20 Sold/Traded: Yamaha: Motif XS8, Motif ES8, Motif8, KX-88, TX7 | ASM: Hydrasynth Deluxe| Roland: RD-2000, D50, MKS-20| Korg: Kronos 88, T3, MS-20 | Oberheim: OB8, OBXa, Modular 8 Voice | Rhodes: Dyno-My-Piano| Crumar: T2
