They were in the studio trying to come up with something for the theme and were getting tired. What's Going On by Marvin Gaye. The legend James Jamerson pissed off laying in the floor created/played that part. Story has it Marvin Gaye and his production team knew that was to be the big song of the album so wanted the best it could be. So they were in the studio with the Funk Brothers all day doing take after take after take. Night time came around and the Funk Brother had to leave to go play their club gig that had. Gaye told them to come back to the studio after they finish the club gig. Tired and ticked they came back and started working on it again. When they got the now famous track Jamerson was as I said drunk, ticked off, and laying in the floor on his back playing bass. Also of note the album What's Going On was the first Motown album to have musician credits on the cover, that was thanks to Marvin Gaye insisting. Then Stax with Duck Dunn and Atlantic Records with Jerry Jemmott and Chuck Rainey. Larry Graham with Sly and Graham Central Station. Moving forward with Quincy Jones and again Chuck Rainy and then Louis Johnson. All the great production teams had their main bass player or two. Paul McCartney is a favorite but I could not pin it down to a single song there have been so many. It is his concept of bass covering everything from tone to presence in the mix to melodic choices and riffs that appeal to me.
