elif
A while back, someone posted a grainy video of a man playing exceptional boogie woogie (IIRC) piano at what looked like a party in someone's house. It looked impromptu but he was evidently well known by everyone but me. I would like to share this with someone but I have not been able to find it. Does someone recall? Jonathan Hughes
This probably isn't it, but here's Keith Emerson (along with Carl Palmer) playing Boogie Woogie and Oscar Peterson very much outclassing him on a TV show that has a set that sort of looks like a party at someone's house (who happened to have two grand pianos). Hmmm... well, Oscar ate Keith's lunch. No surprise there. Seems like Mr. Peterson even went easy on him, like Keith's lunch was just an old peanut butter sandwich or something. And Keith was really good, but... OP, I don't recall the video you mention so I am not much help, sorry. Quote It took a chunk of my life to get here and I am still not sure where "here" is. Jonathan Hughes
One of the comments mentioned how Boogie Woogie left hand is supposed to mimic the mechanical rhythm of a train (I have no idea if that's true), so it's supposed to sound mechanical, and Oscar Peterson was swinging far more than is typically called for with Boogie Woogie, so it's not a good example with which to compare the two. Buuuuuuuuut, Carl Plamer is soooo stiff. He sounds like a high school rock drummer who just joined the jazz band, and my guess is that even if they tried to swing, it would come nowhere near close to both how hard AND effortless Oscar Peterson and his musicians swing. elif
Not Eldar, not Tatum, not Fats, not Oscar, not Keith. This was an unknown to me. The video was it looked it was shot in somebody's dining room during a family get together. People milling about with food/drink. The camera shot was from the left end of the keyboard. Thanks for suggestions though - good stuff.
