Ive made a serious error: Omnisphere

Recommended Posts

My new Omnisphere software arrived today.

I"ve been sitting at my boards for 5 hours so far :D

Just, wow. So much to take in and explore. One thing I really like is delving into Keyscape Creative that lets me get (no pun) creative with the Keyscape instrument combinations.

Time for a sugar free Monster. I"ll sleep tomorrow :2thu:

I corrected my error last year by selling it. :-)

Can't afford to be distracted at my age. Less is more. And I feel the same about any other VI that has a gazillion choices (many of them quite similar).

For the same reason, if I ever buy another hardware keyboard, it'll be a DP vs. a DAW. Again, less is more. :-)

Futile. Resisting, that is.
The last time I came across that phrase, a Borg was doing a karaoke of The Ballad of Jed Clampett.

Just spraying Shout on my shirt!

Man I've wanted Omnisphere for years. It's just - well it's $500! Surely it goes on sale a couple times a year. Next time it does maybe I'll snag it.

Well I take advantage of the online places that do the 12 payments no interest, or else I'm not doing it either. Plus it's nice having the boxed versions with the USB cards to physically load everything.

Well, just think how much less expensive than a Kronos it is...

But there isn't any cheaper way to get that quality of sounds that easily. Omnisphere simply sounds good, and all the common sounds are well-represented. There are so many samples from old keyboards in there, you can even learn some of what they are good for! I discovered that a lot of the pads I liked best all came from old PPG samples. I didn't know what that was, looked it up, listened to samples, and it was, "Yes, that is the sound!". So I learned something just from picking favorites.

Although the samples are undeniably excellent, the synth capabilities are over the top. It's all there. In terms of value for money, it is not at all expensive. You could have Omnisphere plus Keyscape and VB3 (if you need Hammond) and never need anything else for gigs.

I've chosen to use UVI's Falcon as my sampler because I can import samples into it (unlike Omnisphere). But for Rompler duties, Omnisphere is what I wished the Kronos could be. It is wonderful.

I'm all software at home...sometimes I feel I perhaps should have just gotten Omnisphere instead of "nickel and diming" myself with bunches of others. Not that those are slouches (Repro, Diva, NI Komplete) and all on sale, but for the price I could have had Omnisphere and then some. Again it's hard to complain about what I have, I'm the weak link in my "rig" for sure :D

One"s not better than the others. They are completely different types of synths despite all being software based. Depends how you"re using them and what you"re doing with them. I"d no sooner want to put together a multitrack song with anyone of these than I would a Kronos or Montage. Use each for what it does better than the rest.

Variety is a good thing. Unless you want your music to sound like a product demo.

I have very seriously begun to consider Omnisphere for my next Mac upgrade, in a year or so. I'm a Logic adherent, so its unlikely that I'd completely give up Alchemy or my juicy EXS24 collection. I'd also retain M-Tron Pro and my pair of AAS PM synths, Strum & Chromaphone 2. Those are unique specialists I wouldn't discard. Everything else.... poof. We joke about marrying an instrument, but that's what I'd do. Plan for a substantial SSD, buy it on their USB drive and stop looking at other women, er, synths, because you're married now.

Stokely makes a fair point about nickel-&-diming, but I grew into my odd collection with purpose. Looking at The Big O this seriously is a bit like the first time I saw the 'head trip' scene from "2001: A Space Odyssey," my mouth hanging open in awe. If you feel like you're ready for this, you probably are, but part of it must include admitting that you're walking into the mouth of madness voluntarily. "Man found drooling and incoherent, face down in keyboard, Omnisphere sequence bubbling away overhead.":rawk::laugh:

Glad you're enjoying your new synth, David. I paid for Omnisphere in installments too: first by buying Atmosphere, and then by paying for upgrades over the years.

I'd say that the only virtual instrument I've used more than Omnisphere is Kontakt; but that's only due to the wealth of great additional Kontakt libraries. About 99% of my Kontakt use is with third-party productsâor Native Instruments Komplete librariesâwhereas 90% of my Omnisphere use is from its factory presets (or from rolling my own). In that regard, Omnisphere offers a far superior bang-for-the-buckâespecially considering it comes with over 14,000 patches now.

It only gets better if you own other Spectrasonics productsâlike Keyscape or Trilianâthat can be used, and further edited, within Omnisphere. Add me to the list of Keyscape Creative fans. The free (to owners of Keyscape and Omnisphere) library alone (with over 1,200 additional patches) is almost worth the price of admission.

Best,

Geoff

Tom, that's appalling! When you can get three pop culture references into one groaner of a scenario, the stink is like a pun that makes you run from the room holding your nose. We read it, so as we exit, we have to drop $5 and a 32 GB flash drive in the bowl by the door as tribute.

Omnisphere is far and away my most used instrument for music for corporate videos, sound design, etc. Its depth and sound quality are off the charts. I'm pretty much of the mindset that I'll buy anything Spectrasonics puts out as long as Eric Persing is at the helm. I own all their VSTi's and they're simply wonderful.

Very good point. I certainly don't regret what I have, I made some excellent choices and it's time for me to stop looking at products (I mostly have) and spend more time practicing and making music!

Comparing Omnisphere with Sampletank seems to me like comparing a submarine with a train. Both are solid means of transportation, but they mostly take you to very different places.

Best,

Perhaps, perhaps not ;)

Sampletank 4 is just one example of a whole cottage industry of virtual instruments that were either created or have evolved specifically to try and compete with Omnisphere. None has managed to knock it off its perch yet, but some of them are interesting in their own way.

Other options include Falcon, ENGINE, Zebra, Pigments, Parallels, Kontakt (realistically)...

... and the original version of Alchemy, for that matter.

If I had to do it all over again. I would buy only Omnisphere/Keyscape, VB3, Ravenscroft 275, and (OBXII - needed for Rush Tribute). I have so MANY other synths, but only the previous get used.

Philosophy: The real cost of software is NOT the purchase price, but the TIME spent learning it. If I were to value my time even at a paltry $20 per hour, the time involved in learning a new synth would far exceed the purchase price. For this reason alone learning one synth and learning it well is the most efficient path. The great thing about Omnisphere is that it can do pretty much everything. When you factor in the time savings from having to only learn one product, the purchase price of Omnisphere becomes inconsequential.

Now if I could just get my time and money back from the 10 other synths I have purchased at anywhere between $50 -$200 it would be great. Oh well, live and learn.

I seem to be in a tiny minority. I bought Omnisphere and lost a few hours playing through the patches. Sound is awesome, but I'm not really using it much in productions. It's generally 'too big' for the stuff I do- Agape Sheen and Agape Warmth get used a bit, but I hear those everywhere. I feel like I need to have it, but wish it fit better in my work.

That's a valid complaint. Every patch sounds huge and inspiring. I find I have to strip effects or at least dial them back significantly on most patches to get them to not muddy up a mix. From there I'll tweak filters and envelopes as needed. I don't have to program much from scratch because of its vast library, but i tweak almost everything.

Well, that's subjective, of course. I would be surprised if anyone bought it and was disappointed with it, as long as they know what they're buying.

I found it very glitchy sometimes on my laptop. I don't have any troubles with Diva, Kontakt, Kontrol, Arturia, or other U-he products. (some of them have the option to switch to "multi-core" computer settings...)

Is there a setting I am missing on Omnisphere? It was very discouraging to have some patches skipping and popping away.

Electro 5, NI Kontrol S61/49, MX49, PC3, Rev2, Prologue, Pro3, Juno-DS, Mopho Keys, SE02, drums, tons of synth software, guitars, amps, and pedals...help me!!
