New KORG SV2??

Recommended Posts

that's a good find.

If its true, this board seems to be crowding the $2200 korg grand stage.

Not an expert on the Grand Stage, the SV2 seems like internal competition.

Why fit in, when you were born to stand out ?

Nice! I've been poking around for the sv1 but was turned off a little by some user reported glitches and such. Looking forward to seeing this. I doubt it will, but I'm hoping it will have a flat top, although the article says it will probably have the same look.

I love the overall vibe of the SV1 (and the 73-key form factor availability), and it would fit perfectly into my funk/soul/disco rig under something like a Roland FA06 (anything with ROMpler and VA capabilities - little or no clonewheel needed). I'm playing EPs and clav, and some AP, all night long. But the RH3 action isn't the greatest, and it's a little heavy.

As mentioned though, why this and GrandStage? TBH, I remember a comment here that Korg should have used the Nord Electro as a template. Both GS and Vox Conti have limitations in their clonewheel execution (forgivable on the GS, not so much on the Vox). A Korg stage piano with proper drawbar control of the CX3 clonewheel model, including C/V and percussion (and the ability to "dual-keyboard" the organ from an external board while playing pianos locally) would be really cool.

Cheers, Mike.

I think almost every jazz keyboardist in the Bay Area uses the Korg SV1. Unless it isn't red (there were maybe two alternate colours), the first thing I do is ask if it was borrowed, but it isn't far from that as each player bought it after seeing one of the other jazz combos use it, and being impressed by its sounds and how they blend with the band.

That's a long-winded way of getting to the main point, which is that I myself might be interested in an SV2 if it is a serious upgrade from the SV1 (keybed action, etc.).

Did I read this correctly in the specs ?

Speakers: 2 x 2.5" with 2 x 3" passive radiator

I suspect that refers to a variant model and I will predict that it won"t be built in speakers but, rather, a speaker system you can attach to the piano or its stand, ala Nord Piano monitors!

It looks more like a bump in spec in all the expected areas to me rather than anything revolutionary, split and layer features, extended polyphony, more sounds etc. Not my cuppa tea but I have always liked the design. Some may not like the RH3 action. I"m a bit confused too about how it stands against the Korg grandstage?

Actually starting to doubt myself as I note they do have separate weight specs for SV2 and SV2s. Maybe they have managed to incorporate built in speakers into the design of the chassis.

In any case, I'm hoping they announce it officially at NAMM in a couple of weeks. Going to take a very close look at this one...

I've been contemplating getting an SV1 for the last few months. Had Sweetwater's product page in my history and went back there after a month or so, and see it's no longer available! When I searched the site, it shows accessories for the SV1, but not the board. Reading this...it now makes sense.

Definitely some nice improvements. Only took them 10 years to completely solve the problem of accidentally changing presets.

SV gives you immediacy over controls that the Grandstage does not. That, combined with its eye catching form, make it arguably a better stage axe, especially for the types of music that call for real time tweaking.

SVS is about 2 lbs heavier, so I think it's pretty clear that's the one with built in speakers.

My biggest problem with the SV is fingers feeling crowded by the controls. It wasn't so much a physical limitation as a mental distraction. But I haven't heard other folks complaining about that, so I'm an outlier..

I wonder why the SV-2 sound engine is called EDS-X (Enhanced Definition Synthesis - eXpanded) while the GrandStage and Vox have Kronos-derived engines like the SGX-2 engine for acoustic pianos and the EP-1 engine for electric ones.

Edit: must be a different animal altogether, sample based, as was the SV-1.

Also, the SV-2S now has speakers, somewhat resembling the $600 Korg SP-280.

Wow. I gave up waiting for this keyboard to come out at least five years ago. I had a long love/hate relationship with my SV1s. (I think I went through three of them.) If they managed to keep the things I loved while improving the things I hated, I will be so all over this. I thought the Grandstage was as close as we'd get, but while it's a nice board in its own right, the EPs just don't have the vibe of the ones on the SV. I don't know if it was the tube, or the sampling, or some combination of the two, or something else entirely, but... if they can nail the vibe of the SV EPs while increasing the velocity layers to get rid of the jumpiness, and provide APs that are in the same league as those on the Grandstage (or at the very least don't start buzzing like a DX7 patch once the loop kicks in), this may just be the board I've been waiting for.

PS - 20 bucks says there's a preset called "Herbie tines," since that's the thing everyone was complaining that the original didn't provide.

Looks very much like the same hardware, with expanded memory and user control via the editor of splits and layers.

IIRC the underbelly is mdf. Pretty sure but don't quote me, lol.

I loved the Wurli. Just miles ahead of anything else I've played. With or without the tube. One of the few digital electric piano emulations that I've found really satisfying to play, and yes I have played the real thing.

Look forward to seeing it in the flesh later this year but not expecting it to be a huge upgrade from the SV1, though hopefully with the larger memory the acoustic pianos sound better.

I had to look up what MDF was, but I don't recall seeing any wood under there the various times I opened mine up to replace broken keys.

Hey, Josh!

I also have gone thru 3 SV1s!

And I have the same love/hate feels about it as you....

Also, IME it was the tube that made the SV so vibey...

My SVs all had composite bottoms (1 red and 2 black)

How long after NAMM are these boards usually available?

Are you in US ?

seriously, if Korg has a product specialist pitching the SV-2 , watch the video.

The. specialist might provide a shipping window. The board is assembled/made in Asia

so it takes 3-4 weeks transit to get to west coast ports.

There are more logistics, such as distribution to country distributors etc etc
