Remember the thread awhile ago about Jazz in the US. I can listen to these guys all the time, they're great. Talk about counter and sync, keys are killer.

Another awesome Snarky Puppy concert on the books. The show was held in downtown Pittsburgh on 9th Street between Liberty and Penn Ave. It was like a big 'ol block party.

Lineup for the evening:
Chris Bullock - tenor sax
Evan Weiss - trumpet
Mark Lettieri - guitar
Justin Stanton - keys and trumpet
Nate Werth - percussion
Cory Henry - drums!!!
Mike League - bass

This was the smallest Snarky Puppy lineup I've ever seen. Barely enough bodies to cover all the parts!

Setlist (I might be forgetting a song here)
Binky
What About Me
Shofukan
Young Stuff
Tio Macaco
Whitecap
Quarter Master
Slow Demon (encore)

So the big excitement for the evening was witnessing Cory Henry on drums. He did a great job. It's really not fair how talented he is! He is a very energetic drummer, definitely has a sloppier style than Sput. The tempos definitely seemed to be pushed a few more bpm faster with Cory behind the kit. I didn't think they were going to play What About Me; given the difficulty of the drums on that song I figured that might be a little outside of Cory's ability. But they played it, and he nailed it!

What About Me features a big guitar solo, and I've only heard Bob Lanzetti play it before. Mark definitely brought a totally new vibe to it. Bob's playing is more spacey and avant garde, while Mark made it super funky. I hope a recording of this show turns up online somewhere, though I haven't seen anything yet.

The show went for about 1:40, even though they only played 8 songs. They all lasted in the 10-15 minute range. It's amazing how tight these guys are, hitting stops and different changes without even trying. Though I guess playing hundreds of gigs a year helps out!

Quarter Master seems to be the guest player song; this time world-renowned trumpet player Sean Jones sat in. He killed it, bringing some really high notes you don't usually hear from the usual Snarky Puppy trumpet crew.

Once again, I was blown away by these guys. They definitely are my favorite band.

Here's the only video I've found from last night so far - part of Justin's keyboard solo on Young Stuff

I took my fancy camera with me last night and got some pics - here they are for you to peruse:

Justin's keyboard rig - Rhodes 88, Moog Little Phatty, and a Roland Juno Di

Some sort of stombox next to the LP - not sure what it was or what was patched through it

The Subphatty (only played on during the encore)

The fearless leader!

Evan taking a flugelhorn solo

IMO, Mike is one of the greats of bass face

Cory on the kit

Cory snuck up to play a lick on the Moog between songs

Sean Jones

Of all the members of Snarky Puppy, I feel like I'd get along with Mark the most, based solely on the fact that he's wearing a Cactus shirt

I just came home from introducing & seeing them at the Rochester Jazz Festival. Was given a copy of We Like It Here. Similar set list to what's above but we had Lingus as the encore. Jason Marsalis sat in on drums & percussion. Knew every fill and accent. It was between sets of his vibes group.

Richie- Sean Jones is such a great player and a very nice guy. It's great you heard him in such a unique setting.

Yeah, Sean is a cool dude. I did a week long summer jazz camp at Duquesne University after my senior year of high school (2005) when he was still teaching there. He did some sessions with us trumpet players that were really cool. One day he just took us outside, and we sat around on the grass and asked him all kinds of questions about trumpet. I wish I could remember all the stuff he told us that day!

Finally going to see these guys - they're coming to Italy in July at UmbriaJazz.
It's one of the greatest European jazz festival, for 10 days the beautiful medioeval town of Perugia becames a venue of uninterrupted live music.
Apart from the big names (this year we have Scofield, Bollani, Hancock, Shorter, Monty Alexander, Rubalcaba, Hiromi, Michel Camilo, just to name a few) playing in theatres and arenas, there's music just about everywhere in the streets, bars, restaurants, squares... and out of all this mess, Snarky Puppy were the very first event I bought a ticket for!

Can't wait!!!

and yes, Cory is just annoying... could he be just a little LESS talented, so we mere humans can avoid feeling humiliated?

You are in for quite a show. Saw them last night as part of DC Jazz Festival. 8 people on stage. "Sput" back behind the drums allowed Corey Henry to get behind some keyboards. They played two 50 minute sets with a 30 minute break between. No B3 on stage, but Corey spent a lot of time playing a Wurlitzer 200, in addition to his Kronos and a Little Phatty. Jason had his typical setup of a Rhodes Suitcase with a Roland Juno DI on top. Both of those cats can solo like nobody's business. I hadn't heard Corey play a Wurlitzer before, he was channeling some Ray Charles for sure. So much soul. Can't wait to see them again when they get back to the USA from Europe.

If I ever move to Brooklyn, Snarky Puppy would be one of the main reasons why!

And thinking about the other current thread on the economics of live music... this picture gives me hope that there's an appetite for gig-going - Snarky Puppy's sold out gig in London last week, 3300 people:

Corey Henry on the Wurlitzer was my favorite part of the show, part of the reason I was so stoked when I found this video. Dude really channeled some Ray Charles for sure.

Super-inspiring. Earlier this year, I taught a semester at a music college in India. So many of the students there were really into Snarky Puppy (all exposure via YouTube). Bob Lanzetti is a friend, and he graciously gave some time to do a Skype Q&A with the students. They got some great insights, as did I. It's nice to see a band go for quality and have it catch on like it continues to.

Teaser released today for their next album, on which they collaborated with the Metropole Orchestra. Really excited for this one! And, they're currently in the process of recording Family Dinner Vol. 2. Looks like a good year ahead for the pups!

Very cool. Totally different flavour. Did you catch the Family Dinner 2 teasers on Sput's Instagram? A clip of Cory learning synth lines and a clip of the whole band chanting hypnotically.
