Bluesape
Just tearing in to one of the last slices from yesterday's feast. Sweet potato pie has totally replaced pumpkin pie in our household-it tastes as good or better and is easier to prepare. Hats off to the Southerners who brought this delicacy to the forfront of holiday dining. Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never. OK, OK! Sometimes never! S. Yeti Bigfoot, Esq.
Awwww, man! I thought you were talking about some Delta Blues song I'd never heard of or something...not the actual pie. I don't even want to think about food anymore for a while. I couldn't eat another bite even if I knew it would kill me. S. Yeti Bigfoot, Esq.
I think we got a good start here....I'm thinkin' I/I7-IV-V in G....maybe a nice tremolo picked solo and some slide? http://www.websmileys.com/sm/cool/269.gif "And so I definitely, when I have a daughter, I have a lot of good advice for her." ~Paris Hilton BWAAAHAAAHAAHAAA!!! Eric Iverson
Fine by me. I'm into blues mandolin lately, so I'll work up a nice tremolo picked thing on mando. By the Rich Del Grosso's "Get Your Nose Outta My Bizness" CD is great blues mando, and there is another one out there by Billy Flynn - "Chicago Blue Mandolin" available from mandolincafe.com which might be worth checking, if you like such things! I'll leave the slide up to you.. much as I love to hear it, I never learned to do it. It ain't as easy as they make it sound! Seriously, I hope this inspires lots of other people to write tunes together... why the hell not? And maybe even HAVE FUN in the process.. what a concept! If you're "playing more and enjoying it less", to paraphrase the old tobacco commercial, well, is there something wrong with this picture?? Corner Pocket
Didn't James Taylor, (Sweet Baby James" do a tune called "Sweet Potato Pie" on the "Genius Loves Company" album? Just checked with Amazon, and yes, yes he did. Here are his lyrics: Oh Lord I feel fine today I'm walking on cloud nine today I'm over that line today Happiness is finally mine today I guess I'm just a lucky guy And I'm prepared to tell you why It's strictly on account of my Sweet Potato Pie I'm the fellow that she loves the most The main reason why she left the coast She's my little girlzina That much hotter that a jalapeno Tender like a night in June Sweeter than a honeymoon Brighter than a silver spoon Just as crazy as a loon Softer than a lullabye Deeper than the midnight sky Soulful as a baby's cry My Sweet Potato Pie I used to see her around the neighborhood I wonder how she grew up so good She belonged to Freddy and he was bad And I never was ready to make him mad I'm glad I had to wait awhile A little bit too juvenile I needed to refine my style A silk suit and a crocodile smile So let the whole damn world go by 'Cause I just want to testify From now on it's me and my Sweet Potato Pie Peace, Paul Peace, Paul ----------------------
Eric Iverson
Cool! Thanks. James Taylor is a great songwriter, for sure! I may have that one somewhere.... I'm still gonna carry on with ours, though! 3rd verse I chased that little girl, high and low And up and down Yes, I chased that little girl, high and low and up and down And then one day she asked me,"Why on earth are you still hanging' round?" ----------------- So that's three verses. There could be hundreds more of course... your old time bluesers would make up dozens of them as they were going along, since they were storytellers at heart! I'm thinking it would be cool to add a nice bridge outside the 12 bar format, for variety. For some reason the old Beatles tune "She's A Woman" comes to mind.. that bridge: She's a woman who understands She's a woman who loves her man And then they go back to the standard form. A touch of genius!
Bluesape
There is an old jump blues tune called "Sweet 'Taters 'N 'Possum Meat". Dunno who wrote it. I'll have to let someone else tell me if them vittles is good enough to write a song about! http://www.websmileys.com/sm/dressed/bek173.gif Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never. OK, OK! Eric Iverson
Possum meat? I gotta ask the local delis if they have it! I don't know if there's a cool blues tune about Possum Meat, but there is a great old one about "Bacon Fat" by Taj Mahal, which I wish I had a copy of.. great rhythm guitar part! Kramer Ferrington III.
Not sure. To me, a song about Sweet Potato Pie would DEFINITELY have to be in ragtime. Sounds like something R. Crumb And His Cheap Suit Serenaders would have done. Band MySpace My snazzy t-shirt empire
Eric Iverson
What do you (*)* Italians know about ragtime, spaghetti-eating #$$?? Come to think of it, though, what we do we Iowans, born in the '50s, know about it, either, except that some of us like it? We weren't there, either! Eric Iverson
Reminds me of "Cool Hand Luke" where Luke [Paul Newman] bets he can eat 50 eggs... and does so, with a little help! Not recommended unless there is money riding on it! But I can eat 50 ears of corn, as can any self-respecting Iowan! Any takers?

Eric Iverson
One of these days, when I'm not working for a living and taking care of my wife and practicing guitar... I'll shell an ear of corn or two and see how many it takes to fill a can. But maybe my DAD knows....
