Guitar Geezer
OK I'm back on line! (I rarely use the dialup at home) I'm still shooting for the Ja 1 date, start taking Wellburtin on the 15th. In the meantime I'm TRYING to cut back, less than a pack yesterday. ANd like Haga, I NEVER smoke inside, haven't for years. And the cold snap that FINALLY hit here is Big D will keep me inside a lot more. And LPCustom hit a good point, there usually some sucker out there that will try to sabotage your efforts, however There a very few smokers left in my social circles, and they are all rooting for me! S. Yeti Bigfoot, Esq.
When someone tries to sabotage your efforts to quit, just take that as a personal challenge. You guys CAN quit. I did it last February after smoking almost continuously for 37 years (two and a half packs a day). It's not easy at all. Anybody that tells you it's a "piece of cake" is doing you a disservice and is either lying to you or they weren't really addicted. It's damned hard. There are a few things that you need to know and do: 1. You have to be ready to quit and serious about it. You cannot quit for someone else. You have to do it for yourself. 2. It helps to set a date for yourself and when that date comes, do it. 3. Tell a lot of people that you are going to try to quit. Most people (at least the ones that are really friends) will support your efforts and do what they can to help you. If they try to sabotage your efforts, take that as a challenge, and then STAY AWAY from them until you are off the cigarettes. 4. Use whatever products are available to you if it makes it easier. Welbutrin and Nicoderm patches are a big help IF THEY ARE USED CORRECTLY. If you use the Patch, use it EXACTLY as the directions tell you to. If you try to "fudge" a little or if you try to just use them as a crutch or whatever, they will not work. If that's your plan, you might just as well keep smoking and wait until you're really ready to quit. Use your little support group here. It's a great idea. Friends are huge help. You will get cravings from time to time even well after you quit....sometimes strong cravings. Do whatever works for you to get past them...some people use chewing gum or hard candy...I just went and found someting to do to occupy my mind. The craving will pass in just a few minutes. Most importantly, if you do slip, don't be too hard on yourself. It happens sometimes. Just get right back on the wagon immediately and keep trying. Good luck guys. I know you can all do this. Mass Effect
Now I'm really looking forward to the new year. It would be nice to finally be done with this stupid habit. It's hard to get any decent playing time in because I have to step outside and smoke every 15 minutes. May try to line up a session with one of these hypnotists between now and then. Guess it couldn't hurt. http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/fragend/confused-smiley-013.gif quote:Originally posted by mdrs: It's pure B.S., and obvioulsy inaccurate. Mass Effect
Just quit drinking too. A String
Hey! Congrats JJ! The first few days are the hardest. Remember to drink lots of water to help flush the nicotine from your system. If you think you won't have the self-control to hold back at a party, skip the next party or two. It's always best to avoid temptation until you have a few weeks under your belt. A String
No headaches here either. As Vince said, the extra oxygen to your brain should really stave off any headaches. Bluesape
Great point! - She's hooked on the stuff - up here we have Tim Horton's, which seems to have an addictive pull on some people, who won't even acknowledge other shops - very strange. Bluesape
Tim's is burying Starbucks up here. Starbucks is stronger than most coffees here. My sister once developed minor palpitations that were attributed to caffiene. She was inhaling Starbucks at the time. I'm no coffee connosieur, but Tim Horton's has dominated the coffee and doughnut landscape in Canada, just as completely as McDonald's rules the burger business globally. Ironically, Tim Horton was a Canadian hockey player, and the company named after him is now owned or at least controlled by Wendy's. Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never. OK, OK! Sometimes never! Well, I'm pretty much a non smoker, really. Sometimes I backslide (such as last night) but I can go for weeks without smoking a cigarette or even wanting one. I think I could improve and never, ever smoke at all, but I'm a long way from smoking that pack a day, the way I used to. That's why I'm interested in how things work out for people. Maybe I can learn something. Plus, I think it's a pretty worthwhile thread so it's worth bumping it up whenever it falls too far down the page. That's a European thing, Vince. I'm Italian and love espresso, but I don't know anyone who consumes it by the thermosful, the way a lot of Canadians and Americans guzzle coffee. Here, at least, espresso is served in very tiny cups, with cream and sugar usually on the side. Some of our local coffee mugs will hold a litre of wine. Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never.
