from recesion to depression?

Recommended Posts

Since the attack on Sep. 11 our president has urged us to spend money to help our slowing economy and I'm thankful Congress seems willing to help. However, I recieved a letter a couple of months ago from my utility company here in Oregon stating that my rates will be increasing 30-40% this month due to "the energy crisis". This is actually much better than the news reports of last summer of 400% increases (that's right, up to 400%!!!). Our leaders in Washington seem genuinly perplexed as to how to get us to spend our money but with an increase like this in just one area—let alone rising gas prices, taxes, ect., I would be a fool not to hoard my money for a year or two. Is this just a concern for people in the Northwest or are utilities actually increasing this much nation wide? A $300 check won't alleviate the fears of 400% increases next year! What do YOU think Washington should do to help the economy? I'd LOVE to spend money on new gear, but it gets mighty cold in the winter.

If you feel that you are really going to feel the pinch as a result of the increases, well, you *should* be thrifty with your money! If you can afford it, keep getting out there, go on vacations, spend money that you ordinarily would be spending anyway, etc. etc. ------------------ Ken/Eleven Shadows/d i t h er/Nectar http://www.elevenshadows.com 4 music, travel, more! http://www.cdbaby.com/elevenshadows

Recession, yes. Depression, I hope not. Some companies are staring to show earnings on the upside. I think the market will be stagnant until after the first of the year. We need some good earnings reports. The market will come back. It always has... It always will. I see this as a good buying opportunity. Take advantage of it of you can.

Anyone have an idea what it costs to prosecute people for having a small quantity of pot on them? I wonder what it costs to keep them in jail for two years... From 1992 to 2000, *5 MILLION* people were imprisoned for simple possession charges. I wonder what the total cost of that was.. i cant remember how many quarters in recession constitutes a depression but from the looks of things, we might just edge up on it... hopefully it will work itself out. then again, i just filled up my car wtih gas that costs $1.09/gal. cheapest i have seen it in years around here.

"i cant remember how many quarters in recession constitutes a depression" - alphajerk. Reagan said it best, though I don't know if he originated it: "A recession is when your neighbor loses his job. A depression is when YOU lose Your job."
It's OK to tempt fate. Just don't drop your drawers and moon her.

yep. but that would kill the companies that run the prisons. prisons are HUGE money... the gov't pays a LOT to keep people incarcerated, whether it's running the prisons or whether it's a private company. In the very rural area where i grew up, the three prisons in the area were some of the largest employers. maybe they could start arresting people for talking on cell phones while driving....
You mean the *taxpayer* pays a lot to keep people in jail..
maybe they could start arresting people for talking on cell phones while driving....
Cruel and unusual punishment notwithstanding, maybe that WOULD be a better idea - the average cellphone junkie behind the wheel is MUCH more of a danger to society than your average pothead, that goes without saying.
