dave251
Gitane DG250M; exlight Martin SP phosphors(11/15/23/30/39/47). LD omni pattern mic at 18"; starved plate tube mic pre, into my DAW. Touch of verb. No limiting(this will become apparent on the single line stuff) through. Critiques please on guitar tone and recording effort. Thanks. Dennyf
Geez, people must have been busy yesterday . . . Given 60+ years of improvement in recording fidelity, it's difficult to really know, but that new Gitane certainly has the same CHARACTER as the guitar in the ol' Django recordings. Makes me want one even more, in spite of the fact I don't play that bag. I like the tone a lot. Is it a loud guitar in person? Technical nits and grits: There's some mains hum gettin into your recording from somewhere. Also, while it may be the character of the guitar, it sounded like there was a bit of 400-500hz "honk" in the overall EQ. Might be buildup in the room, (or your 'verb) which otherwise is nice and live sounding, but it's more than a "touch" in my opinion. And your sidestick-&-tambourine(?) click was audible in the recording. When I use a click, I record it on a separate track, and go on cans to record subsequent tracks. Then when I mute the click at mixdown, it's totally inaudible. But overall, it sounds pretty good! The guitar is pretty impressive, given that it's a "student grade" instrument. I've played and worked on a lot of guitars over the last 30 years...and the build quality ranks with the best of the American marques. Might be just a touch too much finish, but other than that, just clean, accurate workmanship. If you remember the original "red label" Yamahas from 1970's Japan, and comparing them to a Martin D18, you could probably make a parallel between these and a "real" Selmac style guitar. Probably not quite as loud, but the baseline tone is there. I play this guitar with two other guitarists, one is an old Mossman, the other a top o the line Yamaha all solid dread...and it keeps up pretty well, especially considering the Yamaha is one of the two loudest flattops I've ever heard. Recording: thanks for the input. I had the mic up pretty hot, and I think the phones I was using are the "open" type...for sure there is bleed through from the drum track on my daw. The mic was at 18" from the guitar, on the omni pattern...so I had it cranked. It always amazes me how sensitive these LD condensers are. I think the honk is from the room; in my basement office...the natural reverb in the room sounds like it has a bit of resoance in the lower mids; with the omni setting I can believe that is where it's coming from. The computer was running when I did the recording. I need to remember I'm recording with an open mic instead of running direct with one of my electroCoustics. Again, thanks for the input. Sauce
i can't really offer too much purely based on the fact that i know almost nothing when it comes to recording but i was really surprised by the clarity of the sound (and this is with my crummy computer speakers) in the recording. and as for the guitar tone i think it was great, bright i guess would be the word i'd use but not too much so. it fit the song very well. Then you'll never hear surf music again...
