chaseguitar
Hi, I read a great article on legato-style playing and exercises, and I have been working on them for the past few weeks. It's made a big difference, and I'm now working on keeping my pinky close to the fretboard. One thing I've noticed is that if I turn my hand counter-clockwise farther than I have in the past (so the tips of my fingers are perfectly parallel to the ground) I have an easier time with my pinky and also with pull-offs. Is this the proper method, or am I cheating? Thanks! Tom

musicalhair
Hey, I don't know if it is "wrong" or not but "pivoting" your hand so that you can play somethings that otherwise are tough to play is fine. I've pivoted my hand in that direction and more often in the other direction for certain things (like the latter for "forths" based lines). As long as your hand and whole body is as relaxed as possible with no tension, and making sure your thumb is in a decent place and that your playing up on your finger tips for must normal things and your nails on the fingerboard are clipped then you should be on the right track. check out some comedy I've done: http://louhasspoken.tumblr.com/ My Unitarian Jihad Name: Brother Broadsword of Enlightened Compassion.
