Boss DSD-3: Sampler??? I don't think so!

Brother-in-law was kind enough to pass down some old stompboxes recently. I was willing to accept no matter the condition or variety- no looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Considering that I didn't yet have a delay, I was excited to find out that he had one to donate to me. Went over to his house and picked up a Boss DSD-3: Digital Sampler / Delay (http://www.bossarea.com/loadpage.asp?file=boxes/dsd3.xml), which is basically a DD-2/DD-3 with this "sample" feature.

On my way home I had imagined the level of sample play that would put me on par with Keller Williams (ok, I was dreaming). The sad reality is that delay time is that of a single note. Well, I guess that was "technology" back in the '80s

Now I plan to get my use out of the delay features; plus it just looks rarer than the DD-3. However, I am left wondering if there is any real application of the sample/play feature that I may have overlooked. Any advice?

Thanks!

DSD-3 Revisited.

Ok, so I visited www.bossarea.com and saw that this pedal had a very limited production. So, although not entirely useful, there is some "wow" factor (how shallow of me).

Read through some reviews on the DSD-2 & 3 on Harmony Central and came up with a few ideas. Although the Sample button only samples 200ms - 800ms of sounds, it layers things right on top of one another.

So my concept was to create a sound scape out of triad notes (each in a seperate octave). Maybe hit the root as a harmonic, slide up to the third note, and then hammer out an octave note- something to show motion.

I have my volume pedal before (for volume swells) and my Boss Phase Shifter PS-3 after wards. Playing the loop into the shifter makes some cool sounds. I can keep the sample loop running, and play with the depth / rate settings on the Phase.

Too bad my guitar is fed over the delay and also into the phaser. It would be cool if I could split the line and play some ethereal licks over the loop. Maybe an A/B line switch would do the job?

Now I'm sure this is is a fairly common trick with the Line6 DL4 and Boss DD-20 units, but I amazed myself with some creativity on this crappy little pedal. Ah well, pat on the back for me.

I will probably keep this unit until I can upgrade. For now it has a one-star cool factor (out of five stars that is).

While we're on the subject of cheap pedals, I've got an old Radio Shack "Electronic Reverb" around here somewhere that I modified for guitar use. More of a echo, really. It's cool in that cheesy sort of way.

I've also got a small collection of Rocktek pedals. I've got the Flanger, Chorus, and Vibrato (It's actually tremolo. no pitch shifting) :) The Rocktek chorus is my favorite.

BlueStrat

a.k.a. "El Guapo" ;)
