Ray (again)

I couldn't find the old topic to update it.

We've finally got to see this film in the UK and I must say, I felt it was exceptional. Jamie Foxx was unbelievable. He's got all the moves, twitches and angularity of Ray Charles. There were times I believed I was actually looking at Ray, and not an actor. If Jamie Foxx doesn't get an Oscar for this, there's no justice.

Having said that, I also seen 'The Aviator' and IMHO it's, overall, a better film. Matbe Best Film for this, and Best Actor for Foxx?

Some have said "Ray" is almost more like a "portrayed documentary" than a dramatic film, so maybe it's not the best film...there are also certain aspects of it that I found disappointing, i.e., it quite suddenly takes a turn in the last segment that steps back from detail & encapsulates the entire second half of Charles's life in about 15 minutes but it was quite an achievement, not only for the casting (&, beyond Foxx, the actors that portrayed others in the film seem to greatly resemble them) but for the sheer fact it got made!

Side note: The actor that plays young Ray, C.J. Sanders, is the son of former Ohio State & Tennessee Titan football player Chris Sanders.

He landed the gig based on a photo of his in a modeling agency talent book. He's supposed to have more gigs lined up based on his performance in the movie.

I would bet money that Jamie Foxx wins for best actor.

I had the priviledge of working with Mr. C in the last few years of his life (gear things...I didn't play guitar with him...) and the movie really moved me. Ray was involved with this project for a long time and it really reflected his complex nature.

Well they couldn't cover his whole life in 2 hours...and the dramatic element of the film (which I won't give away) climaxes in the 60's, so I saw that last piece as an epilogue or a tribute. So, given that, I thought the film was an extraordinary accomplishment. The question is: will Jamie Foxx win one or two Oscars?

I have not seen this movie yet, but I was wondering if any one else noticed that a 'fast-track' way to get an oscar nod is to portray someone with some sort of handi-cap? And, Robin Williams has been doing a MEAN Ray Charles for years.

I am not taking ANYTING away from Jamie Foxx, cause I just watched Collateral, and I thought he was very good in that role, but it seems like if someone does a role like that, they are a shoo in ( My Left Foot/ My Name is Sam, Eat my green eggs and ham, etc..)

Yes, Richard III, etc., but much of Ray is spent showing why Ray didn't let his blindness handicap him.

It's also true that Foxx doesn't just imitate Charles physically but is a pianist himself & brings a certain attituse to the role that goes beyond the humor of Williams or others.

Also, while "handicap movies" may seem a shoe-in, there was a lot of opposition to getting this film made.

Terry Gordon told me as good as it is with Jaimie, he still missed many nuances which only someone as close as Terry and Ray were, would appreciate.

More to the point, when Terry came to the Zaolla booth at NAMM, it was easy to see, he had lost a very close friend.

I said as much, in all respectfulness, and Terry said it was more then that even, Ray and he were not simply producer/engineer/artist but Ray was a father to Terry, and he a son.

I hope to heck that the film tears it up against Clint and martin.

I also hope the record cleans up at the Staples Center.
