Hazy Hill
I bought a new 500 MHz iBook three months ago. There were two models available in Turkey; the ones with CD-ROM and the ones with combo drives (CD-ROM + CD-Writer + DVD). The combo drive model was rather expensive and I am always sceptical about all-in-one units. They tend to breakdown easily and hard to get them repaired. So I bought the CD-ROM model. Today I went to the local Apple store planning to buy a CD-Writer for my iBook. At the Apple store they told me that for iBooks and iMacs no external CD-Writer (neither USB nor FireWire) supports more than 2X speed writing!!! and and C'mon; there's got to be a way, right? OK, for music master CDs I always use 1X and maybe 2X option but for copies and data CDs it would be.... Well, simply unaccaptable. I'll be checking your replies and waiting for someone to post a message like... For my iBook / iMac I'm using ____________ CD-Writer, with __________ software via USB / FireWire port and I absolutely have no problems with at least 8X speed. C'mon guys or else I have to mess with connecting this iBook to a PC network via ethernet, transfer the files and write'em on CD on the PC I already have in the office and it's gonna be a nasty nasty process I believe. Will F
I have the same computer that I use with a 12x Firewire burner and I've used it at all the available speeds up to and including 12x. It's a Club Mac drive (TEAC mechanism) and I use it with Toast 5. This message has been edited by Will F on 10-18-2001 at 11:39 AM
surfjunkie
my Que firewire burns at 16 (reads at 40), but i usually burn audio at 8x just to be safe. data at full speed with no problems. i've done audio tests at 16x and it seems to be fine, but i don't want to test every audio cd i record. 8x is pretty fast, anyway. We have a Plextor CD-Writer in the studio and when we record Audio CDs @ 8X we sometimes have problems with some CD players. In general Denon and Technics are cool but Sony players have some problems reading the 8X Audio CDs. For the Audio masters I always burn @ 1X and for the copies 4X just to be on the safe side.
