bty3056
Some great pics there Bic. i went there when i was a lot younger and spent my whole time dropping my scarf off the highest points and trying to catch it at the bottom glad to see you had a good time, i can still recognise some of the places in those pics. I just wish i was old enough to fully appreciate that beautiful place. I still had fun, though! congrats again on the promotion.

musicalhair
I did a tour of some castles in Denmark as part of a tour my ship set up when I was in the Navy. It was really cool in that the tour went from oldest to newest (of the ones we went to) so you got to see the changes as artisan skill technology and available materials changed over time and they also through in some history lessons. One of the castles was the one referenced in Hamlet. check out some comedy I've done: http://louhasspoken.tumblr.com/ My Unitarian Jihad Name: Brother Broadsword of Enlightened Compassion. moeblues04
Beautiful pics Bic...though they pale in comparison to your lovely wife. I love the history of castles. There is something about that whole era that intrigues me. fantasticsound
When we lived in Germany (1980-1, I was 13-14 years old.) we took every opportunity to visit castles. Up and down the Rhein and Main rivers (Burg Rheinfels is my favorite ruin), Nurnburg Castle, Neuschweinstein (the most famous castle thanks, in part, to it's use as a blueprint for the Disney fairy-castles) and many others. We visited several castles in London and Paris, but I regret we never had the chance to visit any of the country castles of England, Scotland and Ireland. I love those lawns and architecture. phaeton
Thanks for sharing BiC! I dig castles like you wouldn't know- the whole era, atmosphere, way of life (both real and fictional) has intrigued me since i was tiny. I hope someday to build a small castle-esque type home to live in, on acreage, with a moat. Foh scheezi. Someday i hope to tour the castles of Europe, with those of Ireland, Scotland and England being the most desired Dr. Seuss: The Original White Rapper . WWND? Chris.
nice castle BiC man. and stunning wife. There's a beautiful castle smack in the middle of edinburgh. http://www.nvva.nl/renekrul/catalogs/valentine.edinburgh.castle.national,gallery.12067.jpg http://cap.ee.imperial.ac.uk/~tcg/My%20Pictures/Edinburgh%20Castle.jpg I think the oldest part of it is from about 400AD ..which is quite an abstract thought. Escpecially abstract for the americans, when you see them in edinburgh, you can sorta tell they can't really fathom the idea of history. I've heard one say "nice castle, but why did they build it next to a railway station?" . oh dear. . And theres a cannon that shoots a blank round from the castle at 1pm every day. I can't help but amuse myself with the idea of US tourists hitting the deck to dodge bullets from a phyco gunman every time i hear it. http://www.faceoffriendship.org/fof_banner_468.gif
fantasticsound
One of my favorite castle-related bits of fun was looking at grafitti in the upper reaches of Notre Dame (No! Not the college! The Cathedral! ) that was 600 years old. Pretty cool. When my wife was 19 she and her best friend saved their money and spent several weeks in England and Ireland. (Beatlemaniacs sent themselves to Liverpool.) My wife is 1/4 Irish and was able to visit relatives of her mom whom mom had never met. She also got to kiss the Blarney Stone at Blarney Castle. She has some wonderful pictures of the castle from that trip. BTW - forgot to mention, those are some wonderful pictures, BiC. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. BiC
Originally posted by DARKLAVA: Nice pictures BiC,did you happen to go inside any of these castles?I mean tell us about it.Yes, we sure did get to go inside. We toured the dungeon and saw instruments used for torture and execution. We also saw the living quarters aspect, and the "basement" where the workers did their craft. We also went up and into the towers. It was bascially a VERY narrow spiraling staircase of 75 steps (I counted them ). We also toured the gardens around the castle. Also on display was all sorts of medevil armor and weapons. From time to time, they would have various demonstrations on the lawn. We just saw that from a distance while touring, so I don't exactly know what it was about. You can see some of the stuff set up on the lawn in one of the pics, and the pic from atop the tower looking down. There was also "Ghosts Alive". It was basically a mini haunted house confined to one of the towers where they re-enacted a murder which took place there. The "ghosts alive" were the actors. But there should be hotels nearby since it is in town. We got there about 10am and was ready to leave by 1:30pm, and that's with lunch too. But our tour bus didn't leave until 4pm. So my Wife and I just hung around. It doesn't take long at all to see the castle. It would be better to go when there's a lot going on. NMcGuitar
I don't know exactly what it is, but there is something extremely compelling about castles (at least for me). Here's a couple more (from the Scottish Highlands). http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v486/nmcguitar/ED2.jpg This is Eileen Donan, and it's been used in a lot of films and movies. - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v486/nmcguitar/urq1.jpg This one is Castle Urqhart.
