I miss vinyl

I thought you were referring to THIS kind of vinyl . :D FYI link is not for the faint of heart or those using pacemakers. Its "really" not that bad.

Seriously though, I agree. There was nothing better than opening up a KISS album to see what goodies they had in there for you. Plus even if you're not over 30, you still need a magnifying glass to read the lyrics and look at the pictures in a CD today. Plus that's why I usually buy a CD, download it to my Nomad Jukebox and computer hard drive and then sell it without missing much.

I miss playing the records backwards for the demonic messages...

You can't do that with CD's... :(

Wolfzan; you can get a turntable at a yard sale for a few dollars, and huge eclectic record collections that way too. People just dump things, even valuable collector records.

I had a roommate bring home a yard sale turntable ten years ago and then moved out without it a few months later. I dug out the turntable a year ago and put on some records just for a lark. Now I go to used record stores and get $2 records. The scratches in the vinyl are annoying, and a half side of a record is an awkward length of music, but it is a real blast to listen this way.

When I move next time, I'll have to dump the turntable, records, and almost 300 cassettes I've collected over 25 years. I wish there was a good way to get that information digitized in a short time. Anyone?

There is. Buy the CD. :D;)
Good one. :D

I wonder how much of this collection is even available on CD. How much longer is the CD going to be with us?

Mmmmmm, v-i-n-y-l-l-l-l! Thanks, Cos! CD's definitely suck when it comes to trying to read liner notes, but I do not miss the cleaning, special scratch-free liners, all that hassle with LP's. Those double albums did come in awful handy for rolling your own smokes, though!! :D

I've been recording some of my vinyl to cd in my spare time (I can set the level, leave the room for 20 minutes, edit later). LIke Tim said, I wonder if some of the stuff is even available on CD. Plus I get to listen to some cool older stuff. Ever hear of The Fents

Anyway, the tactile experience of the LP is definitely missing for today's listener. Its more relaxing to read a big fold of liner notes, and look at all the pctures.

On a related note, I now have to go pick up some 35mm film I had developed. Remember cameras before digital? :D

Seriously though, I tried to put a couple cassettes into MP3/CD format and it was torture. I used an old Walkman, my computer and a free MP3 converter, so it wasn't super high tech, but I'm sure if you use a better/real cassette deck (WOW! I haven't said cassette deck in years) and a non-free/better converter, it might not be so bad.

I was a very avid collector of albums back when they were in the form of LPs, and, indeed, there was all kinds of info and what all, along with all kinds of artwork and the such, that the smaller packaging of CDs don't quite capture as well. I also remember the days when a new release LP album cost around $5 (I know I'm dating myself here, but oh well! LOL). Of course CD's do sound better (but they still can "skip", just like LPs did), although I mostly use cassettes since that's what I have in my car.

Me too. I had a 4 trac Teac real to real along with a quadraphonic stereo system. It was great. I was the king of stereos in my army barracks. The helicopters on 'dark side of the moon' went all around the room.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but the 8 track thing brought back a lot of memories.I had a floor mount craig powerplay in my '68 mustang and I "flush mounted" (yes, I was ahead of my time) my speakers in the back. Oh did that sound great with Steppenwolf "magic carpet ride" cranked up. Too bad for all the distortion. :freak: Maybe that's what happened to my ears.

I've still got my 2 reeel-to-reels (a TEAC 2-track, and a Tascam 4-track - yeah, I know that it's basically the same company ;) ), and my cassette deck(s), my minidisc players, my turntable, etc.

I sometimes do conversions to digital (ie. transfering to CD) for friends & family. I usually end up getting a couple of beers or dinner out of it... It sounds like a lot of folks could use this service...maybe I should think about charging people!! :D

The nice thing about doing this for my friends is that I've gotten to hear some interesting old stuff that I never would have otherwise. One friend had an old reel-to-reel of her grandfather, who used to be an opera singer - it was the only recording her family had of him, and they had no way to play it. Not only was my friend's family thrilled to hear it, but I really got a kick out of it too - he had a great voice!

May all your thoughts be random!

I still buy vinyl. Some might be surprised to see how much is released on vinyl by independent record labels. I have a stack of 7" records two feet high at home, and another one the same size of full-length LPs.

Like most things in the quality of today's music argument, it comes down to the big record labels not thinking that packaging matters much. There are some beautiful CDs coming out, too, but it's rare that most artists will demand that kind of packaging.

So unfortunate. Having an interesting liner to read is half the battle of putting out a record, if you ask me.

Yep! Remember.. every dollar invested in CD delivery is yanked from the artist's cut before they get paid anything, so cool liner notes may be wonderful, but they can bankrupt an artist on a modest selling CD. Very sad.

i buy vinyl ,always second hand at fleamarkets and sell the stuff too .

but don't start missing vinyl too soon guy's it's coming back!

here in europe you can already buy new record players in some stores ,and i don''t mean the exclusive audio stores ,but manistream too.

and almost everything you wan't you can still get on vinyl ,just have to order it .

only it's more expensive than a cd ,how ironic in the beginning of the cd's it was the other way around.

I still have some of my vinyl and a nice player to go with it. (Bastid son stepson ripped the rest and sold it for...) I also have a great cassette player and the tapes to play in it. CDs too, and will be moving into the dve realm soon. I gave up on the 8 tracks & remember the 4 tracks??? along time ago though I had a 71 Caddie Sedan DeVille with a great stereo and an 8 track player that we just loved. We'd just cruise and listen & Kayle would pull down the rear arm rest and sit on that & rock out. (Before seatbelts were mandatory) I guess he was in the right "stereo image" spot.

You Miss Vinyl / I Mr. CD :D

I thought it was a strange admission of something.

Sorry... that was lame.

I still buy the stuff. I love it, to hold it as I sit in the big chair and listen to the sound swirl about me.

One thing everyone should invest in is this... Pinnacle Clean Plus

It simplifies the process of converting your vinyl and tape (yes 8 track) to CD. Easy processing with lots of control for cleaning up the picks, pocks and dirt without limiting it to death. Fuzzy logic stuff and an easy to use interface that gets the job done.

I think the thing I'll eventually get to is fixing those tyvek CD envelopes into the original vinyl jacket.

$100 and a computer with a USB port! How hard is that!

I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder.
