recommend a Dream Theater Album

Gruupi

I keep hearing about Dream Theater and was wondering which album is considered the most important. Not neccessarliy someones favorite but which is the most widely accepted. I have only heard a song or two over the years and obviously I am not going to hear them on radio. Any Ideas?

What kind of stuff do you like?

I'll give you a genre and then an album which you would like most if you're into that.

Rock: Images and Words

Metal: Awake

Acoustic Rock: Change of Seasons

Prog Rock: Scenes from a Memory

Jazz/Blues: Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

Nu-Metal: Train of Thought

Any of these albums are good, but that's how I break it down. It's not to say the Nu-metal album is terrible if you like acoustic rock per se, it's just saying don't try one and then give up.

My favorites are Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Scenes from a Memory and I'm not even a big jazz fan.

Shut up and play.

That's a tough one, but you've got the Dream Theater experts here (Revo and me), Gruupi. I however don't know if I'd agree with the genre buckets Revo put the CDs in since IMHO Dream Theater is just a heavy, EXTREMELY talented progressive group with varied influences period. Personally I couldn't say if you like jazz or acoustic rock etc., get this DT CD (no offense Revo). If you like progressive, heavier music with GREAT musicians, run to the store now with bundles of cash!

Personally I have and love each and every one of their CDs, except for their brand new triple live CD that just came out on Tuesday, but I heard from others that its the best live CD set they ever came out with, which is saying a lot since they have 3 great live CDs.

If I had to pick a "must have" CD from them I'd have to say "Once in a LIVETime" just because you can hear how amazing the band is live and it has a good variety of songs from different CDs. As far as a studio CD, I agree with Revo that "Scenes from a Memory" is one of my faves, but as far as a "must have" or "most widely accepted", "Images and Words" (their first CD with James LaBrie singing), is probably the one you're looking for. Either way, if you listen to any of their CDs in its entirety a couple times (except for possibly "When Dream and Day Unite" due to the poor "IMO" original singer), you'll end up buying all their CDs anyway. ;)

Sidenote: this doesn't prove anything except that John "the man" Petrucci is not too much of a slouch on guitar, but give a listen to this guitar solo from their most recent studio CD.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

I agree with what you said cosmo, but I think each CD has that sort of a vibe to it. I've read too much about the band to think otherwise. "Blind Faith" actually has a bluegrass-type solo in the middle of it. You won't hear that on their original work like Awake.

For another thing, any CD post-1998 is going to be best because their newest keyboardist kicks ass. Jordan Rudess can come over to my house and use the stolen 1918, ivory-keyed upright grand any time he damn well wants, whether I'm home or not.

Shut up and play.

I agree on all counts. :thu: Some songs have different vibes, but I felt it would like saying if you like piano get the "Destroyer" CD by KISS (the CD with "Beth" on it). ;) As Revo said, Jordan is an aMaZiNg keyboardist, but "Images and Words" from 1992(?) was more widely accepted due to radio airplay of "Another Day" and the video for "Pull Me Under".

Oh yeah? Do you have the CD singles for "Lie", "Another Day", "The Silent Man" and "Hollow Years"?? Huh? Do ya? Do ya? ;)

FYI I don't. :bor:

Wow, what a pile of wankola! :bor:

Buy some Albert Collins albums instead...

Hey man, to each his own. I respect Albert Collins. But I am still a Petrucci fanatic.

Hey Revo, I'm not looking to start a fight here. I just listened to the soundclip and thought it to be souless "wankola". That was what I posted in response to that clip. I am aware that John has alot more going for him.

Whenever I hear that type of player I think, "He's such a good player, when is he going to play a killer note and really hit me with it?" Thus the Albert Collins reference.

I guess John's overprocessed guitar tone kind of leaves me cold too. Almost no dynamics, no depth of field.

Anyway, I just wanted to talk guitar, not get personal. How's that chorus pedal treating you?

I was getting personal at all. It's cool.

The song you listened to was a horrible example of his talent. Listen to "Goodnight" from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. You'll change your mind, I guarantee it.

As for the chorus pedal, it's doing well. Were you the one who recommended it?

Shut up and play.

Actually, the only CD I have heard Pettrucci play on is "Liquid Tension Experiment". Kind of a supergroup thing with Tony Levin on Bass, the DT keyboard player and I forget who was drumming (Steve Smith?). It's got it's moments but John's playing doesn't do much for me. It's not really Tony Levins best work either, although I am a big fan of his Gabriel outings.

All the players on Liquid Tension Experiment are complete monster players, still it kind of leaves me cold.

I like players like Jeff Beck, John Scofield, Scott Henderson, Hendrix etc. who forge ahead in the blues/rock/funk/jazz territory in innovative ways. They all have kind of a blues feel underpinning their work.

Actually, I was the guy who said chorus was a pussy effect... :)

LOL. I knew you were one or the other.

I guess you and I just have different tastes on music.

To me, Petrucci has pushed the envelope in metal, but if you don't like metal, that's hard to appreciate in the first place.

I never was fond of much jazz. I never was a huge Hendrix fan, but I have one of his CDs, because. well, you have to as a guitarist. But it doesn't mean I listen to it all the time. I get more inspired by other guys.

As for the pedal, if you want, you can check out my review back on that original thread .

Shut up and play.
