Roger Forester
My price range for an amp head is around $500. Anyone know of the best amp in that price range for a decent clean tone and a good heavy metal tone? So far I've thought of getting the 200 watt solid state Randall head, that's about it as of now. I think so far it is my safest bet, but I think I can do better, that is, with your help of course! Are Crates any good? For some reason I get the feeling that they aren't that good., but I hope I'm wrong, because they are inexpensive. I <3 you.
PeeMonkey
Are you limited to only amp "heads" or are combo's also a choice for you? If so I would suggest getting a 5150 Combo or Head if you like. I picked one up about a month ago and it is awesome! I got it for about 550$ locally, you might want to consider it, its an all tube 60 Watt amp, and 60 Watts is more than enough to blow up your windows
PeeMonkey
O yeah, and the 5150 is a Peavey. The 5150 is a signature amp of ed van halens, so if you like his tone it'll be great for you, but dont think that the tone is limited to only EVH's it has a wide tonal range. The Lone Chicken
Consider buying an Ibanez Toneblaster 100H amp head. Musicians Friend ( http://www.musiciansfriend.com ) lists $599 as the going price for the 100H head AND an accompanying 4 X 12 speaker cabinet together, so I'm sure you can get the head alone for probably around $400, or maybe even less. I was out for a walk recently and happened upon a garage rock band whose guitar player was playing through an Ibanez 100H half-stack, and he sounded pretty good. GP also has given this amp a rave review. I myself use Ibanez's Toneblaster 25R combo amp, and that little amp sounds great. Robert J. Roger Forester
I just got a really good idea. Theres the Randall 2x12 G2 combo head for $450. My plan is to get that, and then buy a 4x12 cab! You see, that way I get a 3/4 stack, the cab can be for only around $300 dollars though. Now, I need to find a good cab with the BEST bass response in that price range, cause I have a Livewire metal pickup, and it's a bit too trebly for my taste, so I need to get a good bass sounding cab to help make up for it. Please suggest any good bass response $300 4x12 cabs! I <3 you.
Gifthorse
given the choice between the Peavey Classic 50 head and the 5150, i would go with the classic. You can still get heavy metal distortion depending on how you eq it and it is warmer and more dynamic. the clean channel is decent too. http://flagshipmile.dmusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/gifthorse
guitar god lol
i know at least 3 people with the 5150 and they all love it! it sounds killer.
Gabriel E.
The clean tone on the 5150 head sucks. Not just kinda bad but REALLY bad. The high gain tones are stellar. The 5150II combo has a much better clean sound. You might try to find a Carvin MTS or X-series amp. Those are really good. trash it
I've been tould that Peavey 5150 distortion is more agressive than 5150II. Is that true?
Gifthorse
5150 is a great amp. It also has alot of headroom in the mix. The only thing I dislike about them is the compression you get when you pinch a harmonic. It seems to lose dynamic complexity. It is a cool rock amp though. http://flagshipmile.dmusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/gifthorse
