The best electric guitar for less than $300?

Beatnik

Recommended Posts

Hey, what is better? A completely new but cheap guitar, less than $300, or build myself the body and buy the parts of it (pick-ups, electronics, etc..)

By the way, which do you think are the best brands and models options in the market, for less than $300?

Thanks

Hola Beatnik!

I like the Fender made in Mexico Strats and Teles. The great thing about Strats are that they are completely customize-able. There are a lot of different manufacturers of parts for them. However, if you want something other than the vintage style tremolo system, going with a Carvin kit would also be good, but I think they're more than $300.

The older Korean and Japanese made Fenders are great guitars too. :)

I would suggest you to start from selecting a guitar that suits the music you play, the key decision is if that is a solid body, semi hollow or fully hollow. For the latter two categories check out "cheap gear can be OK gear" at this forum. I am sure Jay Turser and others make decent solid bodies too at $150 price level. You may want to consider US-made Peaveys too, you can get good used ones at $100 to $150 at Ebay. I think I'll never spend more than $200 for a guitar any more. To build a guitar from a kit would be too much pain, for me at least.

I've looked into building a guitar myself, and even for a simple design like a Strat copy, it ain't cheap. Mainly because when you build your own guitar, you want the best of everything. And why not? Good pickups, good body, great neck. Anyway, for me, a custom self-made guitar came just short of 500 bucks. Not bad for a dream Strat, but I just didn't have the funds over the summer to start the project. Maybe in time, I will.
Shut up and play.

You aren't going to build a PARTS guitar at that price (unless someone sells you some decent used parts for ultra cheap) that will compete with preassembled cheapies from a number of different brands. No different than computer bundles really.

The best guitar has more to do with what your application for it is than anything else.

That said, I'd look for a used Carvin or something besides the guitars that are in that price range new. Hit pawn shops (and not porn shops).

You might look into Ibanez, as they have quite a few very decent electric (and also acoustic) guitars for under $300. I have tried out the Ibanez AS73, which is like a Gibson ES335 but costs around $299, compared to $2000 for the 335. I really liked the AS73, and I hope to someday buy one to serve as a 2nd electric guitar alongside my trusty Fender Strat.

for $300? i would second Ibanez, my GSA60 was a good guitar, not a problem with it and sounded descent. Now tho, ive gotten an Agile and plan to buy another one. I think the Algile LP2500 models are $220. Great buy, but the next level up from them are $310, dont have one but imagine they are truly sweet for the price. hope i helped.

The best electric guitar for less than $300?

The one you have in your hands now

Seriously, the Ibanez AS73 is a real sweet guitar. I haven't tried the mahagany body/neck 24-3/4 scale length/2HB, but I've heard good things about it.

For that price you can't make your own, and solid bodies are a lot better than semi-hollows IMHO

Gotta' geetar... got the amp. There must be SOMEthing else I... "need".

Well, thanks for your answers,

This is my Squier:

http://img10.exs.cx/img10/1497/SquierStrat1.jpg

I was searching for good sounding les paul or tele bodies, maybe with good humbuckers pick-ups, but for less than $300, the reason is that I love guitars, but don`t have the money right now to buy a Gibson.

By the way I am a beginner, can play good rhytm, love Beatles, Hendrix, Stones, Blues, etc.. but I am not a professional guitarist, just for fun, but I really love guitars and want to learn all theory, styles and tricks, maybe my life is not enough to learn to play guitar really well.

What do you think about this Epiphone Les Paul 100:

for $299.95, is this a good option?

I have an Squier strat that sounds good, but I would like to have the other classic options.

other options:

Squier® Black & Chrome Special Edition Tele®

That ones got P-90's on it instead of humbuckers, but ask most of the guys around here, and see all they good things they tell you about p-90's

As for a tele...

Check out all the guitars Rondo has, as they seem to be a steal for the price.

BTW, you can read reviews for these guitars, or any guitar at Harmony Central

There are a ton of guitars out there that are just as awesome as the Gibsons and stuff. I heard a bunch of great things from the Agile series, so that might be a great direction to head toward, as for alternatives TOKAI makes pretty awesome guitars for a cheap price, they are mainly copies of strats, LP's, and telecasters, but the price is very reasonable for the quality, however they also have the high end ones which are more than your budget, so dont think that they only have the expensive models. I dont own one but I was really considering getting a Tokai LP before I purchased my Gibson. Tried out a bunch of them and they were amazing. Many of the Tokais are just about 300$ or sometimes just a little over, about 300-400$ depending where you get it from.

Hell, I found this:

Tokai sued by Gibson:

Now Tokai is being sued over its ''Love Rock'' guitar, which Gibson says is a Les Paul look-alike. Gibson also is taking issue with other models in Tokai's line that it says mimic copyrighted designs of Gibson's Flying V series, SG series, ES series and Explorer series, court records show.

Since 2000, Gibson has tried to stop Tokai's sales of what Gibson calls knockoffs in Japan, Canada and Europe. Gibson contends that it learned in May that Tokai had secured an American distributor and a handful of sellers. The Gibson suit also names as defendants New Jersey-based Godlyke Distributing Inc., The Guitar Cellar of Lexington, Ky., and Musictoyz.com of Maine.

Now I know why it`s so hard to fine Tokai "Les Paul" models :rolleyes:

When Carvin is doing a sale, the Bolt Kit is unbeatable. Thin neck though. The sound is amazing, and the quality of the fret board and fretting is precision unmatched. I've got SSS. Likely will be replacing the neck with a Warmoth due to thinness.
