removing stickers without harming the finish

Any ideas for removing stickers without harming the finish?

This is really not for a guitar, but, a car. I figure there's enough people on this list who might have picked up a used guitar or car which has on a sticker that NEEDS to come off.

I'm picking up a car very soon. On its bumber are a pair of politically charged stickers. For a variety of reasons, I don't like to have opinions blaring for the world to see on the back of my vehicle.

With an old guitar, I once used lighter fluid to remove stickers. Although it took some time, the lighter fluid worked.

Any other suggestions?

Heat. I have a pro heat gun but a good blow dryer set to hot will work (but it must be hot). The glue that is left behind will come off with bug/tar remover which you can get at auto parts store. If the paint is stained after you get it all off, use some buffing compound in the area to remove the layer of stained clear coat.

Hope it works out.

Orange-Based products work really well. There's one called "De-Solve-It" which is made from orange extract - That gets any kind of residue off... Orange/lemon/citrus products work wonders.

I knew there was something good about working in a hardware store.

A heat gun is the best method, but don't melt the paint. You can also use a gun style hair dryer. I've done that many times. Then use goo gone or whatever goo remover stuff you find at the local Wal-Mart to get rid of any glue past left behind.

Believe it or not, AquaVelva, the aftershave stuff, works wonders with that sort of thing.

I'm thinking of forwarding all of this stuff to Heloise. Does she have a web site?

Thanks again everyone!

Hey, seriously, be careful- while it may work great on stickers 'n' goo, I've actually seen plating on metal instantly removed by accidental "oversplash" of aftershaves like that! No joke!
