fogman
Some of you may recall from other threads & posts that I haven't had a guitar in over 9 years and am looking around to buy that special axe! I bought an amp that's been sitting in the box staring at me for the last 5 months and it's driving me crazy. The question of have for you guitar gurus is do I satisfy my hunger and just buy a cheap guitar to hold me over, or wait an extra month or two to buy something very nice. I've investigated both ends of the $pectrum and am not sure what to do.
Reverse the Curse
wait. If you know your going to have the money just have the patience and get the axe you truly want, cause after all, anything else would be a waste of money. That doesn't mean the perfect guitar for you has to be expensive tho. If you haven't heard, check out www.rondomusic.com . Some of the best deals for the buck you will find. My 100 dollar strat from there has the nicest neck I have ever touched, including the Americans I've tried out. If you know you have the means, or will soon, get the one that you really want. fogman
thanks Cooper! I have never been to this site. Holy deals. Even if I ship to Canada it's still cheaper than the local store that's selling Agile LP's for around $600CND! I don't know if I'll go that way, but you've gove me thinking. cosmo115
The only thing is that if you've been with an amp and no guitar for 5 months, how do you now expect to find your dream guitar within a month??? IMHO and since I had a gap of non-playing longer than 9 years, is that I would go to a local store and try out a bunch of guitars and buy a reasonably priced one (or even an acoustic) to quench your thirst for now and until you can find your dream guitar. I've purchased EVERYTHING on-line, including my recent amp, however IMO a guitar is a very personal item and to purchase something without feeling the neck you prefer, the action you want and hearing how the guitar sounds with your ears would be extremely difficult and would end up costing me a few restocking fees (which would amount to a reasonably priced guitar). Now if you find a reasonably priced guitar in person and then find the same one on-line, that's fine, but even still some of the same exact guitars can be a little different even from the same factory, so you run that risk. Personally, I'd prefer to know what I'm getting even if it's a more reasonably priced guitar. In addition, I would rather be able to play now on a reasonably priced guitar than wait for the dream guitar in a month or two. Plus you can always sell the first guitar on eBay. Best of luck!! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/im/02.gif

fogman
Don't get me wrong. I've been looking for the guitar for a year now. I have it pretty narrowed down. Almost bought a few also including acoustics and a mandolin for that matter! The amp I already know is good for what I want. It's capable of producing the sound I want. I am not worried about trouble with the amp since the owner of the store is a friend of mine, so he'll take care of me if there's a problem. fogman
Here's what I've been looking at, listed in order of improtance. They price from $400 - $1800 CND. GODINs - I like most of them which makes it difficult to decide. (thanks Guitarzan!) OLPs - Axis copy. They feel great and are economical (won't say cheap!) ERNIE BALL MUSIC MAN Petrucci 6 string - beautiful guitar Fender Strat USA model - they feel natural to me YAMAHA AES series - prob. 620. G&L Commanche - very nice guitar. I've recently taken a look at Tokai and Agile LP's. (I wouldn't pay for a Gibson LP at this time) FERNANDES RAVELLE - never tried one but I think they look really cool. So that's where I am with 6 months of playing researching and lots of drooling!
A String
I suppose a good (get the Fender)question to ask would be, what (get the Fender)style of music (get the Fender) are you going to be (get the Fender) playing? Different (get the Fender) styles of music (get the Fender) require different sounding instruments. fogman
A String are you partial to Fenders as say Guitarzan is to Godins? I actually was looking at a '57 Reissue Strat and sold while I was on the phone with the store owner telling him that I wanted it. It played sooo swweeet! I've since played others, but they haven't been the same. Possibly the setup, which isn't the biggest deal; but it sure is nice when the setup in the store is perfect and you can just play it! Guitarzan
i like yamaha's as well. actually i am a guitar whore and love em all! i just can't get over the bang for the buck that Godin offers. the 57 strat you mentioned has different pickups than the standard strats. if you want to know what pickups the fenders have check thier website, i find most salesmen know less than the guys buying the guitars. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will
fogman
Thanks Guitarzan. Like the rest of you guitar whores, I've spent toooo much time at all the manufacturers websites. I know almost every detail except for the underwriters stuff! See, the main problem is that I want everything so therefore end up with nothing!!! I become obsessive so the guitar purchase is dangerous. I am trying to be a good boy and not break the bank and buy one of each(well someday!) So for now I must make sure I buy something that will keep me happy for at least a little while!
Guitarzan
well you did mention that the strats feel natural to you (they are the perfect guitar design). strats are very versatile. if you get one with a bridge humbucker and the new S1 switching you can cover alot of basses. another good thing about strats are the ease of modification. not to mention the models available make it easy to find the best one for you. ernie ball music man makes excellent "strats" they have a very sexy neck. all you need to figure out is the tones (artists and music) you like and then the choice is easier. give us some info fog and lets figure this out. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will
Funk Jazz
those g&l tribute guitars are really amazing for the money. i'de highly recommend going that way, and then upgrading pickups and such as you can afford it. 2nd choice would be a mexican fender with the intent of upgrading components. in the les paul/2 h'bucker spectrum, take a good look at the korean PRS. i've been really surprised by those as well!!! .
fogman
Guitarzan, You may recall me posting a while back about music likes. It's quite diverse. We'll start with the list that common to most! Classic Rock: Deep Purple, Led Zep., Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Eagles..... Bluesy: Clapton, SRV, B.B.King, Buddy Guy... Classic metal: Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, G'n'R.. I also like to mess with some classical but we'll reserve that for when I buy an acoustic! You get the picture. FYI the amp I bought is a Marshall MG30dfx. Maybe I'll get tube amp in the future?
Guitarzan
no question STRAT with a humbucker in the bridge. plus they feel natural to you. i would avoid a set neck dual humbucker axe seeing you have mentioned quite a few strat slingers. the only Godins with 2 single coils and a humbucker is the exit 22 and SD. but both od them are gibson scale. now which strat is the one for you? http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will

fogman
Oops! Neither. I should be careful. I forgot people some times trade and buy guitars here! I love the colour with the white tortoise shell pick guard. Very nice.
Guitarzan
the wife told me the pickguard was "gay". and she called it a Country guitar!!! i will have to leave her. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will

fogman
I am not trying to spend the money. I just want something that I'll be happy with for a while. I have to keep in mind that I haven't played in a long time. Not that I was great to start with! LOL. I was thinking between $600-1700(1800)CND. I take a long time to decide. Obviously! 6-12 months. One of the local guitar shops will now be carrying the Music Man & OLP lines. He's to get his first shipment in the next 30-60 days. I am tempted to wait just to jam a few more axes. The only OLP I've played was used. Fits like a glove though. I have short fingers so the next was very nice. Out of the list I mentioned previously, the leader choices are the Godins, Fender, OLP and Music Man.
fogman
So everything being said! Should I wait a little longer or buy a beater!?? There is an OLP Axis Copy I can get for $200CND. The only reason I haven't bought it yet is that it's sparkly black. I thought about buying it as a beater to hold it off then give it to my daughter after. Afro_Man
I know sell the amp and go buy yourself a fender jazz bass and an ashdown 15" combo. The G&L tributes are amazing everything is made in america except for the pick ups, so you may aswell buy one of those. Try and narrow it down to what colour you want aswell. fogman
If I were to go G&L, it would be the Commanche with Cherry Burst Body, with Pearl Pickguard and Bird's Eye Maple Neck with gloss finish over Hand-Rubbed Gun Oil Tint! As I said, I've been thinking about this for a while!
Guitarzan
i wouldn't bother with a beater Fogman. unless money is tight and you cannot possibly wait. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will
