EmptinesOf Youth
i posted a topic about this a little bit ago but i finally did it. Now i know some people here have experience but i have zip. From what the dude at the local shop explained (i didnt get it from there ordered it via the internet cause we al know the local shop are assholes, mine is anyway )anyway, i think he said the tuning is back wards in comparison to a guitar. so does that mean if you were lookin down the fretboard from the brideg from left ot right the strings would go EBGD? i need all the help i can get, links would be great and even better personal experience. Thanks all ryan oh its a Bellafina Model 50 Viola, made in cazech republic....i dont know if that means, but if i made a bad purchase try not to rub it in... BillWelcome Home Studios
Cool! Love the sound, but I know nothing about the voicing. miroslav
Yeah...I've been thinking about getting either a violin or a cello...just to mess around with... ...what the hell...it IS a stringed instrument. There are just so many very inexpensive instruments on eBay...that even if I got bored with it...it would not be a big waste of $$$. BUT...I have no idea which kind to get...with violins, you get all that 1/10, 1/8, 1/4/....4/4...which, I guess, relates to the size(?) of the instrument. Not sure if cellos have as many choices. I don't want to turn this into a real complicated decision...I just want to get what would be the most comfortable for a total beginner...but something that would also feel comfortable to me...rather than to a small child. So...anyone have any suggestions? miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."
Jim Soloway
Good luck with it. Viola is my favorite instrument in the violin family. Richer than a violin and brighter than a cello. www.solowayguitars.com

EmptinesOf Youth
k i cant get the viola to sound!! i dont know how to set up the bow!!! whats rosin?!!! Did i make a big mistake???!?!?!?
Sauce
rasin is tree sap that you rub on the bow, i think it helps it slide over the strings better. you can find it at almost any instrument store. what do you mean by set up the bow? are the hairs hanging loose? there should be a metal knob at the bottom, tighten that and see if that helps. be careful you don't make it too tight though, it'll bend or snap (either the hairs or the bow itself'll snap). Then you'll never hear surf music again...
Beermouse
Aaah, finally, another enlightened strings player . I've played the violin for 12 years and the viola for 3 years. You'll want to invest in lessons. The viol family is completely different from guitars and is a complete paradigm shift. The lessons will be good if only to show you the basics of the basics. EoS
Viola's a very cool instrument. Been a huge John Cale fan for many years, and it was SO great to hear him finally break out his viola again over the past year. If you haven't heard the album "Hobosapiens", check it out. There was an interview with him last year when he was working on it, and he spoke of the tune "Twilight Zone" - it started out as sextet string arrangement. He said he tried to put guitars on it, but the violas were just too carnivorous and the guitars didn't survive the experience. some samples on his Web Page Have fun!
