Props to the bass players

You may have noticed I added a blurb to my sig line, about seeking a bass player. I didn't think it would help much in a room full of guitar players, so I tossed a thread up on the bass forum . I tried to be low key, and not go "extremely dedicated, rehearse 80 hours per week, no posers" and all that BS.

I got a few sideways glances, but mostly helpful ideas and links to other BB's with classifieds that have worked for them.

Thumbs up to the lowdown community :thu:

A great, interactive bassist is a wonderful thing to find; flashy, wanky guitarists that blare away in their own little world are a dime a dozen.

So, didja get the bird's-eye low-down on this caper, Bill?

I refer to myself as a guitarist who plays bass, and I know that sounds fairly obvious and simplistic, but I think there is a philosophical difference between the way the two instruments are best approached. My problem is that I can't make up my mind which I like better. I am torn between the two, and it's like being schizophrenic.

I got that way back in my senior year of high school. I heard a guitar player so much better than me I thought I'd never be that good. So, I took up playing bass and found that I loved it. And that was cool for a while.

Six weeks later, I saw my guitar over in the corner, and just missed playing it. I told myself "Maybe I won't ever be as good as that guy, but I just want to play that thing", and picked it up. Two weeks later, I saw my bass over in that same corner, and said "Man, I miss playing that thing too". SO I picked it back up and that was cool, too.

But, ever since then, I have been unable to devote myself exclusively to either one. I was in a band for more than 20 years that allowed me to play both (me and the other guitarist traded off) and I was able to capitalize on my dysfuntion, and was quite happy that way.

There is something incredibly satisfying about locking in with a good drummer and playing off of his rhythm. But then, playing lead is like flying without an airplane, and that's too good to give up. If I do either one to the exclusion of the other, I miss the one I ain't doing.

Oh well, I guess it's a better problem to have than not having fingers...

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

Truer words was never spoke. A year ago I came out of a 3-year period of playing bass almost exclusively. I loved it; locking in with a good drummer is just too much joy to be legal. Though technically playing bass is easier, or no harder, than playing guitar in many ways, the whole mindset is different.

Suddenly last summer the urge to play bass suddenly left me, but I am so glad I had the experience. I think it's made me a better guitarist.

During my bass period I turned to the "Low Down Lowdown" for help in getting up to speed. That's a bunch of intelligent, sweet, knowledgeable people over there. Every dumb newbie question I asked was answered thoughtfully and respectfully and I progressed rapidly in my bass playing because of their help.

I check in once in a while just to say "hi". Mad props to bassists, and drummers too (we do love 'em, though we tease them...)!
