A Guitar/ Bass Doubleneck That Seperates?

Ok, kids. This is an idea I've had for a long time. I'll give a 'lil backround first, then... go from there.

I've played guitar for 28 years, and bass guitar for 25.

I'm in a band. I'm playing guitar, and the bassist doesn't know the bassline. I either know it, or wrote it. (cover/original)

So now, I have to take off the guitar, put on the bass, show him or her what to do, take off the bass, strap on the guitar, then we try the song.

Next situation, I'm playing bass and know the guitar parts... you get the picture.

Granted, doublenecks can be cumbersome, but this seems like the perfect situation for one.

Now... bearing economics in mind, What if I were to build a doubleneck wherein the bass and guitar could be seperated ?

Now I have a doubleneck, and a guitar, and a bass.

My original concept involved smaller bodied instruments, perhaps with some sort of sawtooth ot zigzag body contours... thinking the zig(s) could fit into the zag(s).

My biggest problem has been on how to attach/detach the bodies.

Actually, I stopped thinking about it years ago. :D

The reason it's come up again, is that I am now playing guitar and bass in my current project. We actually have at least one song in mind that would involve me switching instruments back and forth in the middle of the song.

I know a standard doubleneck would allow this, but... what about my idea??

Isn't it brilliant? :D

Any thoughts or ideas? I'd be willing to split the patent. ;)

Hmmm, well, after seperation just how much 'body' would be left for the guitar? I'm kind of wondering what will happen with the tones produced.

I saw this somewhere in GuitarPlayer maybe 10-15 years ago. It might have been Mike Rutherford of Genesis with a Shergold? Can't quite recall and the mag collection is in the attic.

Lyrics. Wasted space between solos.

I can't tell you, but I can play it for you.

Hmmm... I first thought this mess up about 17 years ago. I recieved Guitar Player via subscription for 16 years after that.

I'ma check out the Rutherford clue, though.

As far as body mass/ tone thing, I'm sure it wouldn't be the best, but I'm sure it would suffice with judicious use of EQ and effects.

this probably isnt the answer but here's what i do-i'm a solo guitar looper guy and most of my loops incorporate rhythm and bass guitar before i go nuts w/ live guitar over the top...

signal chain goes guitar to whammy pedal-using the one octave down patch-that signal goes to looper then bass amp and the dry signal out of the whammy goes to loop and efx and then to guitar amp.

charlie hunter has his eight string wired so the first three(bass) strings go to a bass amp and the top five guitar strings go to guitar amp.

That Shurgold is a pretty wild instrument... but IMO it's about as fugly an instrument as I've ever seen. ;)

How about You stop trying to re-invent the wheel and buy a Gracie stand or the relatively new, M-brace mic stand mount guitar/bass holder. Either will allow access to both instruments without having unstrap and won't be ridiculously heavy.

Ed Roman has these for $75 but I'm almost sure Sam Ash had them for $50 a few months back. Mic stand not included.

The more robust, but less flexible (mount wise) Gracie stands are nearer the $180 range. Ed Roman only lists the PS-A (acoustic) but Gracie made a PS-E (electric) for shallower bodies.

Dang... that Shergold IS ugly, and the connecting mechanism looks a lil over-engineered.

Yeah, the stand holder is an option, but nowhere near as much fun. :)

Love the Ric, as I'm playing a 4003 as my main bass ax. But gawd, I can't imagine the weight!!

:D What I meant was, it'd be way more fun to actually see this idea come to fruition.

Nobody said you have to listen to him. The topic was doubleneck guitars and he happens to have some.

Personally I'd rather listen to him (in small doses) than to look at him :D
