Marshall MG vs VS vs AVT

The MG is an all solid-state amp. It comes in a variety of models, from small combos (I have a 15 watt version) to separate heads (I think there's a 100 watt head available). For a solid state amp it has decent tone. You can actually get a nice overdrive sound out of it, not just a bunch of buzz.

The AVT series has a tube preamp (one tube I think) with a solid state power amp. A lot more $$ then the MG series, but less then a full tube model.

Because both the MG and AVT amps have solid state power amps, they don't quite have that classic Marshall crunch.

I'm not sure what the VS series is.

"VS" is Valvestate, the precurser to the AVT line (which stands for "Advanced Valvestate Technology).

VSs and AVTs are pretty similar. The AVTs supposedly do a better job of mimicing the response of a tube power section.

Since the VS amps are a few years old, you can probably get a good deal on one.

The other difference between the VS and AVT lines? The use of the tube preamp.

In the VS, the tube preamp is only used in the overdrive stages, while the clean channel is solid state. In the AVT, it's used in all channels, from the 50 watt model on up.

If I were to choose between the two, I'd go for the AVT because of this difference. Not to mention, it sounds better to me. But then again... the MG's are great amps in their own right, too.

I have a 100 watt VS, my bandmate has a 50 watt AVS, to be honest I can't tell much difference between the sound (other than I can go louder :thu: ). Both have pretty decent overdrive channels, 2 on mine. I believe that the 100 watt & up models of the AVS also have 2 overdrive channels.

I only paid £200 for mine second hand about a year and a half ago, seems very well built and had no problems with it, tho I am beginning to get a bit of a popping noise shortly after switching on as it warms up', it disspears straight away tho....

I did have an MG 30 and only sold it after buying the bigger amp as it never got used anymore, had a few nice effects built in but nothing I didn't already have on effects boards.
