Werewolf by Night
I first noticed that something wasn't right when I was listening to the Beatles classic, Abbey Road, on CD from my CD-ROM drive via headphones. Playback being done with Windows Media Player. Paul's vocals sounded kinda odd... It sounds as if the recording is both a little slower, and lowered in pitch a bit. I skipped around to various tracks on the CD, then also tried a few familiar mp3 tracks from my hard-drive courtesy of RealOne Player... same strange slowed 'n' lowered effect. Weird. And VERY ANNOYING!! Any ideas? Anyone? What'nth'HELL is goin'on here?!? fogman
It sounds as if though your CD-Drive is dying. If you use them a lot, they actually do not last very long. A couple of years at best. Did you try another CD to see if it was the Drive?
Teahead
If it's giving the same problems when playing mp3s, it surely couldn't be a cd drive issue? Were you putting extra JD in your ice cream yesterday Kevin? I'm clueless. Tea. Pedal Clips
fogman
Is any other software on the computer affected? How's your virus protection? Do you defragment your harddrive regularly? Have you had any medications or alcoholic beverages in the last 24 hours?
A String
There are a few things to check. Does your player have a plugin loaded that allows you to slow down music (For learning purposes)? Which sound card are you using? My sound card has built in effects that raise and lower voices and change sounds etc. Have you recently added or changed anything? (When did the problem start...could you have done anything to provoke it?) Try reinstalling your soundcard and it's drivers. Afro_Man
I agree with A string, re-install your sound card and drivers, if that doesn't fix it then call up a shop and see what they say. Werewolf by Night
O.K.- firstly, as Teahead astutely observed, as mp3-files on my hardrive were also affected, it is not a CD-ROM drive issue... I actually have no soundcard at all, just the "onboard sound" capabilities of the motherboard. (Which aren't all that bad, surprisingly; but, could be much better, I'm sure.) Windows Media Player does in fact have an "Enhancement" named "Play Speed Settings", but, for whatever reasons, it's disabled/non-responsive to mouse actions. Besides, that still wouldn't affect the tempo and pitch of other programs, such as RealOne Player (which I had all of my mp3s on). I retored the system's overall settings to a previous restore-point of a few days past, and that seems to have fixed the problem. At least, its symptoms! I'm actually kinda psyched that I could tell the difference right off the bat- it was just enough to notice, really, but on familiar tunes- hello, BEATLES! ABBEY ROAD!!- it was driving me nuts! (I know, short drive...) I suspect a couple of things as the source and instegator of the slo'-mo' syndrome; I'll just have to do some trial-and-error, process-of-elimination type work now. Thanks for the interest in my plight, and the input, folkses! A String
I thought you had played the MP3s on WMP as well... Even though you have no physical sound card, you do have an "On Board" sound card. If you know the manufacturer of your motherboard, I would go to their website and download the newest drivers for your sound card (And other drivers while your there!) You'd be surprised at how many problems can be solved by updating your drivers.
